Death Wish

Is it a Death Wish to ride a deep v rim that is 1/4" bent out of shape?

Or should I replace?

I'm an engineering-doctor, and I think you will be fine.

of course you should. but if you can't or wont, you could probably bend it back and true it up.

I'm an alchemist-bloodletter, and I think that he'll get the pox.

The wheel probably won't kill you. It will slow you down though, which is even worse.

piwonka 01-23-08 02:45 PM

you don't have brakes on there huh? so it won't rub the shoes? it's not rubbing your stays right? you don't mind a bumpy ride huh? well then ride it.

bent laterally or out of round? if it's the former, you can carefully straighten it with a rubber mallet.

blickblocks 01-23-08 05:57 PM

Bent? Like out of true?

crushkilldstroy 01-23-08 06:02 PM

Inflate the tire up to 150ish PSI and smack the bent part on the ground as hard as you can*.

*Don't actually do this.

I dunno, usually works for me. What's a spoke wrench, anyways?

bent like ..get __

i mean out of true

hockeyteeth 01-23-08 07:07 PM

If you true the wheel with terrible spoke tension it will quickly go out of true again. I've taken some pretty ****ed up rims to my knee and straightened them fairly well.

frankstoneline 01-23-08 07:15 PM

+1 for rubber mallet and re-truing.
...or mail it to me :D

Everyone else already pretty much answered your question so I figured i'd throw in a joke. hope someone gets it.

I was sincerely hoping that this post was regarding the Bronson series. Bonus points for whoever can name what comes after the colon in Death Wish 5:

666pack 01-24-08 09:35 AM

it's like killing cockroaches... you gotta kill 'em all or else what's the point?

About 20 years ago a company came out with an insecticide that was dubbed "birth control for roaches" it worked but was taken off the market as the higher ups found out that we need cockroaches, they are an important part of "natures balance" just like we need the thugs, if we kill them all then we'll turn on all the good people just to have something to kill, its in our nature. :(

nathbdp 01-24-08 10:05 AM

it was referencing Bronson

I speak in movie titles all the time

like, "Is that The Thing you were talking about?" or "How do you go about being The Professional in that business?"

ilikebikes 01-24-08 10:15 AM

Yeah I know :) Just saw a chance to throw that one out there ;) (How often could someone use the "birth control for roaches" thing!)

When I was working on my winter bike, the only front 700c wheel I could come up with was off of a bike that got mowed over by a car. Needless to say it bent enough to rub against the fork. I jumped on it, and retentioned it so it wasn't so bad. I used to for about 3 months. I just rebuilt a new front wheel.

kemmer 01-24-08 01:09 PM

Smack it on the ground, preferably with a nice meaty CX tire on it. I've used all manner of ****ed up wheels after performing this kind of precision repair. Are you using rim brakes on this wheel? If not, as long you can get it reasonably close to true and it's not out of round, you can use the wheel forever.
