home-made "disc" wheel

once upon a time, i saw a homemade "disc" wheel... the guy had used packaging from old style cases and covered his rear spoked wheel with them, using packing tape to secure everything.

i want to do something similar to this, figuring it'll give my otherwise very stock messenger some kind of uniqueness. Also, given the stock (read: mediocre) wheelset, i'll have no qualms about playing around with it.

so... aesthetics aside, are there any functional problems that might arise from this?

only ones i foresee are (possibly) unwieldy in windy conditions, added weight (which im not that concerned about), and if i break a spoke, i'll have to tear the whole thing apart.

thoughts? opinions? suggestions on how exactly i go about it?

that's usually what polo kids do to keep their wheels from getting ****ed. trace the wheel onto cardboard, and use zipties. easy as that.

If the only reason you are going to do this is to make them "unique" don't bother.

But don't listen to me, I'm just a curmudgeon.

How does it help save their wheel? Just so a stick can't get into the spokes?

Yeah, keeping the mallet out of your spokes makes a huge difference.

And based on that, you don't want to disc your wheel just for riding around. It's heavy, they come loose and rub on your fork/stays, it makes it a huge pain to true your wheels and you get blown around everytime it gusts.

I've also pondered this. Disc wheels apparantly make you go substantially faster, and well, fast is good, really good.

homemade disc wheels do not make you go faster because they are not especially aerodynamic.

i mean, you're welcome to try it, but it's just not really practical. there are other ways to make your bike unique if that's what you want.

I saw it done with PBR boxes, really carefully fanned out on the rear wheel. Never rode it though. I would think that a big concern (if you use more than once piece, as in the design I saw) would be making sure the whole deal is secure enough not to come undone in wind/when you're going fast. Crosswinds would be a ***** too.
