$87.00 for a chain?

http://www.biketiresdirect.com/produ...WI0SI&ssn=5172

I found this chain and its about $87.00 for a bicycle chain:eek:,is it worth it?At my hardware store I could buy 12 chains, why is this chain so expensive and what makes it different than a $7.50 chain.

el twe 02-01-08 02:54 AM

Don't buy bicycle chains from a hardware store.

In Absentia 02-01-08 02:57 AM

That bicycle chain does not belong in this forum.

fungis 02-01-08 03:47 AM

it's a ten speed chain. read the description. if you want to snap it, put it on a fix. if it's for a SS then spend as much as you want. as long as you're happy. it's your money after all.

TimArchy 02-01-08 05:21 AM

It's $87 because it's about half the weight of your chain and made from parts that wear out quickly so as to convince the idiot that spent $90 on a chain that they have ridden much more than they actually have.

"wow, it only took me 3 months to stretch this one out. I must be riding a lot farther on my weekly 1.5hr ride. I wonder how far I'll ride with next years model. It's supposed to be lighter and cost more. I bet I'll ride so much more I wear it out in TWO months"

search hkk vertex silver/black on bencycles.

carail 02-01-08 06:30 AM

so true,
ive paid anywhere from 60$ to 8$ for bike chains.
ive broken plenty of expensive chains, never had any problems with the cheap ones.
don't pay more than 25$ for a chain, i havent seen anything above that price that was wort it.

Please don't buy a chain from a hardware store.

Complete and utter bull****. Do you fixed gear riders seriously think you're stressing a chain more than a bike with gears?

The reason that chain is so expensive is because

1) wipperman
2) stainless
3) 10-speed

Welcome to the world of bicycles. You can buy...
3k front wheels
8k frames
1.3k brakes
600 dollar saddles
and yes 90 dollar chains.

ryansexton 02-01-08 07:37 AM

You can buy 900 dollar saddles from Brooks.

Wrong. Put it onto a mountain bike and sprint in the granny ring.

I've done countless sprints on road and track on 3/32" and 5.9mm 10 speed ultra freakin light KMC chain which I paid a fair bit for and it never snapped. It shifted well, lasted well, looked good and weighed less than a fart. The only chain I have snapped is shimano chain, and that was XC racing. I have never snapped another chain unless it was in my hand with a tool.

And you should see the price of their Ti chain. Overpriced by a little.

Oh yeah, you are way less likely to snap a chain on a fixie. It is probably thhe safest in that respect.

If they were weak under sprints, why do you almost never see a 'weak' chain snap in a tour bunch sprint. I would love to see footage though, if it exists.

Does riding fixed gear (77 gear inches at the time if I remember right ... It was setup for 20 mph @85 rpm, I do know that) on a loaded tour count? 400 miles, 65 lbs the first 3 days & 45 lbs the last 2 days count as more stress than doing the same with gears? I had significant chain wear after that ride haha.

It was fun, though I'm not sure I'll ever do it again, I thought I was going to die up some of the steep hills, and it felt like I was about to pull my feet off at my ankles too lol.

I wouldn't pay $87 for the whipperman stainless ... I've read about way too many failures of that chain. I wouldn't even pay $10 for one of them.

I'll stick with cheaper chains. Used everything from cheapish (haven't used dirt cheap chains, not worth the risk) to Campy Record and all have worked well

I got a Wippermann IG8 chain for $25, and it's insane overkill...but I got it for $25 because the box was all damaged. I also use $2 Pyramid chains and $6 KMC chains too. I'm confident I'm installing them correctly and I run a brake, so I'm not too worried about any chains breaking on me. I will admit it's a nightmare of mine, if I rode brakeless and broke a chain. An $87 chain sounds a bit crazy to me...I have a feeling you wouldn't notice much difference other than a slightly lighter bike and a lighter wallet.

carail 02-01-08 08:44 AM

1.3k brakes

can anybode show me

pretty please :)

Doctor Who 02-01-08 08:59 AM

What gets me is how I can spend $6,000 on a Calfee with Record and some Eurus wheels, or I could spend $6,000 on a Honda motorcycle. I know it's apples to oranges, but it's still amusing.

Hey, you can spend $200k on a house, or you can spend $200k on a Ferrari too.

No. Apparently simple mechanics is beyond the grasp of most people here.

why yes, we do.

my manly fixed gear is so cool and testosterone packed that I must use a 3/4" chain from backhoe or I snap them the minute I start doing my manly skids and skips.

yeah, seriously tho in twenty five years of just ridiculous mountain bike/bmx/jump/skatepark bicycle abuse I never ever snapped a chain, even ones that I had SERIOUSLY neglected.

until I used a lightweight road chain on a fixed hear bike, and did some skids.

so yes, I'd say just from personal experience I think my fixie puts much more stress on the chain, ESPECIALLY since the stress is in BOTH forward & backward directions and is why I like 1/8" GOOD BMX or track chains: the BMX chains are JUST as strong as the track legal chains and half the price.

1345$ and they dont even come with the pads

The pads are made from baby seals and spotted owl feathers, and they're $500 extra.
