A Different Kind of Conversion (pics)

Here is a different kind of conversion for the wife. Started out as a custom Easton track bike. I switched out the handlebars and saddle and made a set of custom coaster wheels for her.

Although the bike is rather tiny, I was able to raise the seat up and take her for a spin this morning. I gotta tell you, I haven't had more fun on a bike since I was a kid!

as much as i like the rest of it... especially having a flat top tube on such a small frame, god i hate those saddles.

JohnnyDoyle 02-03-08 02:08 PM

Clean work. I think that it's a well-matched bike, even if the saddle is a little...well, looks a little like a box spring. It's kinda funny how huge the chainring looks on that small of a frame.

Thanks guys... Actually, the saddle happens to be my favourite part of the bike! People always want to sit on it and see how comfy it is.

wow.........

jobe149 02-03-08 02:24 PM

i like it.

frankstoneline 02-03-08 05:07 PM

what happened to the disc?

spacehippo 02-03-08 05:38 PM

hahahaha.... I was just going to ask that. Mmmmm disc.

Nice new setup... I don't dig the seat but if she likes it then it works for me.

Funny how "this bike is for my gf / wife" always involves townie style, or hot pink, or coasting.

frankstoneline 02-03-08 05:43 PM

haha, the correct answer to my question should be "oh, well, nothing, but now it's being mailed to you when you send me your address, free of charge." though somehow I dont think its going to work out.

spacehippo 02-03-08 05:45 PM

If only, I suppose...

girls and wives are totally ignorant of "what's cool" and like bikes that are comfortable?

AHemp 02-03-08 07:01 PM

Nice job. Where'd you get the Suntour?

The disc is sitting in the back seat of my van in the parking lot. Along with a Koyo radiator and a set of summer tires for my Miata, an old Raleigh frame, a silver Velocity Deep V front wheel and a bunch of books. I no longer have the room in the apartment for this stuff but figure I would hold onto them since I know I'll need them in the future. It's just a matter of switching back handlebars, seat and wheels to get the bike back into serious track mode.

Gordon at Cycle Classics in Portsmouth VA had it lying around. It's NOS. He said he liked the bike so much that he wanted to make sure he used his best parts to put together the wheels. The cool thing is, I asked for just any coaster hub he had available but he gave me the Suntour for no more then what a Sturmey Archer would cost.

AHemp 02-03-08 07:34 PM

Lucky. I just got rid of one that had been converted to a freecoaster, but it's rare to find them NOS.

RaeFixie 02-03-08 07:34 PM

I live in the Bronx, You can't miss my car - It's the only black Hummer with gold plated 28" rims on it. Liscence plate is KILLA. Don't worry I'll leave it unlocked for you. If the alarm goes off then just sit tight, my boys will be down shortly to open her up for you. :P

What are the bars that were on it before the conversion?

Cinelli LA84's. They happen to be my new favourite bars. A bit of a pain to find a stem that fit them though as they use old Cinelli proprietary 26.4mm diameter stems

Coaster bikes use coaster brakes - Back pedal to brake.
