ayez un bon voyage mon ami, le monde est un endroit triste avec votre absence

I ride fixed. Thanks Sheldon.
Your words inspired me to get a proper roadbike, live car free, ride fixed, and enjoy my own eccentric existence on two wheels. I love you. Ride In Peace. |
Had a long long day working on bikes and am now just chilling ....................... I close my eyes and I can see that loon like, genuine gentle ... man (sic). He gave me inspiration and shared my weird love of Raleigh 20's . He convinced me that I did have the talent inside to restore bikes and I could, should and would pass on that passion to others. Any self doubt was countered with .... "Sure you can Ian" .....and most of the time he was right. What a complete loss to all of us ................... I thought you would be around forever and you will, Sheldon "immortal" Brown

I was so stoked that he had answered my basic question - I was walking around my house beaming - spent the next hour explaining who Sheldon was to my wife and sister-in-law. I don't have the words... He will indeed be missed, I hope his advice will continue to inform and inspire.

thank you for teaching me most every thing i know about bikes. i have tried my best to pass on everything i learned form you to others. you have given me inspiration to be mostly car free and take pride in being a bike nerd. your effigy will hang in our bike coop as of tomorrow. ride as hard as you can while living....

My God. What a loss.
My condolences to your family and friends. My Dad said this at his brother's funeral this year--man, does it apply to you: Well done. Thank you. Thank you. |
Sorry to hear this. Late condolences. He gave really great advice and his website was a great help to me when I started cycling.
|
Just heard the news. The world is a sadder place with his passing.
My sincerest condolences to his wife and family. RIP Sheldon |
RIP Sheldon, you got me into fixed gear cycling back in '99. I've passed on your information to a lot of beginning cyclists. Thank you for allowing me to realize the bicycle is a tool and not a toy. This world was a better place by your existence.

Not sure if it made it to this thread yet, but there is a memorial ride today 3/2 at 1:30pm at Harris Cyclery:
http://www.serotta.com/forum/showthread.php?t=41387 Hello All, As many already know, there will be a Memorial Service for Sheldon this coming Sunday, March 2 at 1:30pm. It will be at the First Unitarian Society of Newton, across the street from Harris Cyclery. Details and a map link are at http://www.harriscyclery.com Prior to the service there will be a memorial ride starting and ending at the shop: Meet at 10:45 AM in the parking lot behind Harris Cyclery for an informal memorial ride before the service. Departure will be at 11:00. Distance: approximately 25 miles, pace slow to moderate. The ride will go by way of Weston to Water Row in Sudbury (water level permitting!), one of Sheldon's favorite places to ride, and will return by way of Lincoln. Fixed gears, hub gears, whatever you've got, are all welcome. Please pass the word. Elton Pope-Lance Sudbury, MA |
anyone got pics from the memorial ride?

Just heard about this today. Obviously I don't check the forum much. Despite my best efforts, I thought of Sheldon as an almost superhuman repository of cycling knowledge. His website got me into English 3-speeds and made me happy that there were other people out there not carried away or impressed by the latest craze but rather motivated by a love for life and cycling. It's been said before, but he'll be missed, even though I never met him.

there's no way in hell i would have been able to build my first track bike without emails to sheldon brown. he was the king.
|
Sheldon's website was a treasure to me when I got into cycling and tinkering with bikes 15 years back. His writing style was refreshing and a unique peek into his character.
He'll be missed greatly. But take joy in all that he gave and helped while he was with us. His writing and his bringing together of so much information will ensure him a little bit of immortality for many years to come. |
I built my first wheel going back and forth from the garage to the den where I had Sheldon's wheelbuilding site pulled up, just to make sure I didn't mess up. He'll be missed.

Most of you shop rats have already seen this. Nice obit on the QBP "hot sheet". This gave me a moment of serene reflection in the middle of an otherwise hectic day... |
I probably woud'nt be riding fixed gear if it were not for Sheldon Brown's fantastic website. He provided so much help and inspiration to me. I will always be grateful. Although I never met him his loss will leave a void in my life. It's not often that one encounters someone with such vast knowledge combined with even greater humility. Eternal peace be with you.

A gentleman and a scholar , My heart goes out to his fmaily.
Thank you for sharing all your wisdom with us all. Rest in peace |
Just heard the news - what a loss for Sheldon's family and the cycling community. In the last four years since I've gotten back into cycling Sheldon and his website inspired me to build/resurrect four bikes, including 2 fixies. I was inspired by his common sense and humorous take on life, and I admire people with passion. Before his website I had little appreciation for the true value of the two Bridgestones that previously collected dust in my garage...
Ride on Sheldon, ride on. |
Some bikeforums members really got me with this sheldon brown page. What a great man with a great sense of humor.

It's really nice to see that Harris continued the tradition of Sheldon's April Fool's Day pranks:

I have been overseas in Thailand and just read of Sheldon's passing.
I spoke to him on several occasions. He seemed to always have the time to listen and help. The amount of energy and time he took to answer questions either by phone or email is hard to image. Although I didn't speak to him for over 5 years, his presence and knowledge was easy to access through his unbelievable website. RIP Captain Bike and my best wishes to his family. |
I had the good fortune to meet Sheldon on two or three occasions. He sold me my first Brooks saddle, and I ran into him at various shows. I also had email conversations with him on other occasions. It's sadly rare to find someone with such knowledge and insight, who is also so unbelievably kind and happy to help. It's thanks to him I ride fixed, brake on the right, no tread on my tires, have ridden 3-speed, had a fillet-brazed schwinn, and will soon get a trailer for my little son. We are richer for having known him, and poorer for having lost him.
RIP. |
Forever missed, forever remembered, with every turn of the wheel made less mysterious by your knowledge, eloquence, and enthusiasm. God speed, Sheldon. God speed.

So sad...
Has anyone mirrored Sheldon Brown's sites? If so, what's the URL? I sure hope the information and advice he gave is not lost.
I am not here all that much (shame on me, but I have been busy elsewhere), so I just heard about his death. I learned a lot from him...what a loss. Condolences to his family and friends. |
