Today I cleaned my chain by boiling it my wife's favorite spaghetti pot, scrubbing it with the lemon zestor, and finally baking it clean on her pie plate.

My roommate always gets pissed when I rinse my bike off in the shower. I mean, how else am I going to get all that salt off? I use lysol whenever I'm done, but he still flips.
Good thing he is usually at class when I am done school for the day.

I remember when we used to stuff cans of whatever we could bribe the kid down the hall to buy for us into toiletry bags and drinking as quickly as possible in the dorm showers. The community showers were good for 40oz races with friends. Nowadays I never do that kind of stuff, I just can't get inspired when there's no thrill involved. I think I'll have to try a can in the shower tomorrow morning though.

Seems like beer in the shower comes up every couple of months here. Yes, it is a gospel to be spread.

And on topic ..
This morning I drove 200 miles with my old road bike on my trunk bike rack. When I got home it was completely covered with salt and sand filth from the interstate. Promptly brought her upstairs and gave her a good shower. Frame is in the workstand drying and the drivetrain is soaking in degreaser now.

freshmen year me and my 2 friends would pull lawn chairs into the showers and sit under them for 2+ hours drinking and shooting the ****. we would pass out in the showers, effectively blockading all the showers on our floor for the whole day (had a small dorm). we got talked to a couple times about it but it was well worth it.

Ya whiskey in the shower can be difficult though. A open glass gets it full of shower water if you are not careful. I like a nice shot to keep me warm. Beer in the shower rocks too.
To recap: Drinking in the shower rocks, significant others that deal with our obsessions rock, this thread is better then "can I haz sum deep vs and a break lOLZZZZZZZZZZ?"

"No matter what your dad tells you, never use gasoline to clean bike parts. Instead, use a combination of compressed match-heads and fertilizer."
-Quote from an old Mountain Bike Magazine repair manual
My garage has several grease-soaked toothbrushes. Ya know, for those extra-plaque days.
You really do need to throw the shower beer in the mix though, it's really hard to beat.

Once I tried to harden up a rattlecan paint job on a small part by baking it in my GF's oven, on the back of one of her coookie sheets. Needless to say she wasn't completely pleased to find me doing this, but she was still pretty evenhanded about it.

As a drummer I use the tub or dishwasher to clean my cymbals. And I use lemon halves to get any extra gunk off of them. The blue Dawn dish soap cuts grease fairly well.
As for the quote about never using gasoline to clean bike parts, how hard would it be to stick a cassette in gasoline and burn all the gunk off? I'd probably have the ATF fast-lining onto my roof within 5 minutes...

Well, the gasoline works as a solvent...you don't light it. You ever seen a big industrial parts degreaser tub? It's basically a sink full of gasoline (well, something that smells VERY similar, at least) with a sprayer to recirculate. DESTROYS your hands if you don't have the proper gloves on when you use it. Some big shops/bike companies have these things.

I think lighting it would be rather entertaining though...

I think drinking and smoking in the bathroom in general is pretty great. I know what I'm doing as soon as I get home tonight...

to recap
cleaning chain = not necessary. lube your chain and wipe it off once every week or two. it will stretch before it gets filthy enough to be a problem. then replace it, stretched chains kill the expensive parts of your drivetrain.
shower beers = proof that god loves you. even if you philistines are drinking pbr.
fights with the roommate/significant other about cleaning the bike in the shower = pick your battles. a spray bottle of simple green + hose + yard/driveway/balcony with well thought out drainage = domestic bliss and clean bikes.
