Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Do they make a .......?

Something like a cable stop but round and smooth, to put over those downtube bosses on a SS and not look like you lost your shifter cables. I tried grinding down a black plastic cable stop, it sort of worked until a fingernail got in the way. I still have 9 left.

Any help? I'm building my first SS and that's my first question, is all.

I've seen people mount bottle caps over them to rep their favorite brew. I also believe that someone manufactures things to put over them so the bosses don't look as stupid. Or you can take a hacksaw cut them off them file it down and repaint. The ladder solution being the best looking and most worthwhile.

Thanks so much for the feedback. I can't cut the bike in half, I only have one set of wheels. Yuengling bottle caps will clash with the paint. The "someone makes covers for them" sounds good. Easiest way is to get a thick washer to replace the shifter, and deal with the downtube cable guides and on the chainstay. Hardest way is to cut off bosses and cable guides. Due to paint scheme, I'd need an airbrusher to match it. I like the dice idea, Rey Mysterio. I'll work on it. Maybe I'll invent something.

My old Univega mixte came with stem shifters and these little rubber caps (painted the same color as the frame) over the downtube shifter bosses. They constantly fell off, till I took them off and added some Campy shifters.

Supposedly you can just unscrew the barrel adjuster on those cable stops. Did you try that?

Just mount some downtube shifters and cables and connect the other end of the cables to, say, a fog horn, a potato cannon or maybe a tack dispenser (you'll never catch me now Batman!).

The writers' strike is over, so you guys can finally go back to work. The bullet idea is intriguing. A .50 cal round or even a .45 might work, slotted to fit over the boss. Or use the shell casing and for the H. Munster look. I saw a couple Lego pieces I'll try, too.

Ironic. It's hipsterism which is driving the OP to have to cover up the bosses/remove them anyways.

I'm too old to be a hipster, I already have a $25 bike and a $31 bike (that guy could really negotiate). I'm building an evil twin to my road bike, so the bosses have to be dealt with. A guy on RoadBikeReviews found a great solution, and I think I'll do that. He even found bar ends that look like, well, you'd have to see his thread pics. Another guy emailed me and he put cable stops on the bosses, made a rod that fits in the cable stops, loops under the DT and holds a flick stand. Now that's an engineer who rides a bike....
