Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I wear glasses, but most of the time I have contacts in. I don't particularly mind putting them in in the morning and taking them out at night. I too have been told that I look better w/o glasses but I just prefer contacts because they allow me to see without the distortion of glasses and the peripheral limitation of glasses. I've also only had issue with a lens popping out or becoming irritating a handful of times.

I'm also blind as a bat without either of these...

I have glasses but I wear contacts. They are awesome, sometimes.

I hope to get laser eye surgery sometime.

Laser surgery works great for some people, but not all. Same is true of contacts. As a for instance, I am not a safe candidate for laser eye surgery due to another underlying heath complication. As well, due to an eye injury a few years a go, it'll be a while before I can wear contacts. So, I have a nice assortment of glasses frames. Thankfully, I'm around -1.5 to -2 so I can function without glasses if I need to.

I wore glasses for many years until switching to contacts. I'm so happy to wear contacts because I have -9 vision and my glasses lenses are almost 1/2" thick and look goofy.

Whoa - you can tolerate -1.5 to -2? I can't even tolerate a prescription that is mroe than .25 off

I have prescription Oakleys. Well worth the expense. Polarized lenses that keep out the glare, the wind and the bugs.

I've been wearing glasses since 1981. I like them, I think I look better with them. My wife says otherwise, but what does she know? I have contacts, but I only wear them when MTN biking in the woods so that I can wear clear riding glasses or when riding in the winter so I can wear some ski googles and balaclava. I've also just gotten a pair of perscription sunglasses for the first time. Kinda neat to have when driving, can't stand the contacts at work because the air is just too dry for my eyes and contacts there. Also, at night I get halos around all the lights when wearing contacts. Must be because of the astigmatism.

Jesus, that was a long post, sorry.

No, I can't comfortably lenses that are more than a quarter stop off. What I meant was two things. First, my prescription fluctuates from year to year as much as a half a stop. My prescription also fluctuates throughout the day a little sometimes. Secondly, at even -2 my prescription is still mild enough so I can do some sports, like ocean sports, without wearing glasses. Though I do have prescription goggles for swimming. With a prescription that ranges -1.5 to -2, I could go about my day without glasses. I just wouldn't enjoy it much. I never wear glasses at home unless I'm watching TV for instance.
