Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I use "ride" very loosely. The only reliable weekly ride with this group is a trackstanding and skidz showcase, usu. referred to as a "sesh."

This is an admittedly pointless thread, but no less so than the great majority of threads we have here. I merely intended to poll the other noobs on the thread, not draw in the more experienced posters. I think it is a widely acknowledged fact that a great many of the more recent "conversions" to fixed gear riding know very little about bikes, and display a predeliction towards the "I only care if it works, so banging my lockring on with a screwdriver and mallot should work" school of bike mechanics. That's why I titled the thread "A Question of Style". It is a mere fashion tip that I'm after here.

OPs are solid, respectable rims, but not blingy ones. they're not campy atlantas or araya aeros, after all. lacing open pros to miche hubs gets you a nice reliable wheel, with an old school look, that won't get you many scene points but will treat you well over time. get the CDs if you don't like the look of the regular braking surface for a few bucks more.

I like to put them on my tool box. Send them to me. Be careful. Do not bend.

I also agree about the cool kids and cycling knowledge--why is it when I talk to so many
random fixed-gear riders here and there they often don't know/care about other kinds of bikes?
Porteur what? Touring who? I am interested in all kinds of bikes.
i don't know, i think for some people it just takes time and maturity. for me, i had an interest in old road bikes before coming to the world of fixed, and then having that interest revived when a fill prospective deals for old italian steel came up on CL. from there i've been getting into new road bikes too. i've always loved the look and idea of TT/triathlon bikes as well, the stuff you see in TdF and ironman. and after going to the NAHBS i realized that i'd be bored in a world of just track bikes, i like so many different bikes all across the range.

I generally leave the stickers on my rims out of pure laziness, though if I was looking for style I would probably take them off so as to not be distracting.
