Thank you! I get **** all the time from people, no matter how many times I need to explain keeping my weight let alone gaining more takes a lot of work.

no no you see bikes are built cooked to compensate for the stuff to be on the normal side. i heard it has something to do with wheel dishes.

Your bike doesn't even get invited to birthday parties anymore. You want to alienate it further from the rest of the class?

I want to see what happens when the linkage breaks and those "crankarms" hit the pavement, pole vaulting the rear of the bike and sending the seat skyward. Yowza!

nelzar13 02-28-08 07:55 AM

you can do it fie if you get lsd bmx cranks i think primo makes some that are relatively ok looking. You could single speed it fine if you got a lsd casset hub allso bmx ....

Here's a double chain drive. Only his left side stuff would be expected to fall off.

Take a second and go check out exactly what that set-up is.

It's on Sheldon's site.

hey flim flam. just to let you know, since I put the spd's on with the axels swapped there is no lock-tite in my bike whatsoever. Mackey at cycle solutions advised me against it and I haven't had any problems with loose pedals. also; I had to flip the bolts the hold my chainring to my crank, for the backs of the bolts stuck out too far and hit the rear stay. the heads don't stick out as far and clearance in that area is a real problem. but I have pretty much run a small groove in the stay from riding so it is ok now. btw my fork is not at all bent, the bike handled beautifully before the left side conversion (although it was a geared bike before that) and now it naturallly just wants to lean left. I think that my stem might have a slight lean towards the left sid, and that might explain it. but it does have a significant pull to the left side as I also have a significant lean to the right when going it no handed.

A few months back I tried left side drive for about a week. Lots of strange noises came from my bottom bracket before I switched back. Also, one of my pedals started unscrewing itself. It was kinda fun and different but not worth the trouble IMO. The biggest benefit I got out of the whole deal was that my left pant leg finally got some chain grease stains to match the right.

FINALLY someone with an answer as to the "why" to doing this.

East Yorker 02-28-08 12:49 PM

I did it cuz I am left handed and I wanted a machine that ppl would notice. and since I don't have all kinds of money to buy all the best stuff to turn heads, I did something I had never seen before

OHHHH!!!! That's why???? I thought it was because bmx bikes do it and fixed gears want to be bmx bikes...

tommytannock 06-03-08 08:31 PM

Umm, I actually, seriously did it by accident.

This is why I shouldn't be allowed near tools and things.
Pics to follow.

No, it's all right. The drivetrain should always be facing the sidewalk.

cc700 06-03-08 08:42 PM

everything is backwards.

well just the bb shell threading, that's all.

walkthedog420 06-04-08 12:28 AM

my buddy hit a left side drivetrain. i dont think it looks any better. his pedals unthreaded and he had to buy new cranks... while he was at work! i guess it's cool if you're into being "different". too much work in my opinion.

TreeUnit 06-04-08 02:14 AM

I used to have my fixie set up like this. The only problem exists with the pedals, which have to go on the wrong sides if the cranks switch sides. The pedals do have the tendency to work themselves out of the cranks, but if you tighten them enough, this will not happen.
The only real problem I encountered was with the pedal "flip-up teeth", the little triangles you use to flip your toe into the clip. With my pedals backwards, these were on the front and not the back of the pedal, making them inaccessable.

I'm from England so it's not like I'm unused to it!

The crank puller arrives tomorrow. I think I've spent about twice as much on my bike now due to incompetence in parts selection and tools.

Hey, that's my bike! If anyone wants to do this the right way, I have a spare NOS Deore 175mm 110BCD tandem crankset with 38T ring. It matches the one in the picture above. They show up from time to time on Ebay. PM me & I'm sure we can make a deal... BTW, that bike has a TomiCog on it now. The holes elongated on the cog I made (pictured).

Didnt this bike have a flip flop hub and a freewheel on either side?

I think i remember seeing it posted before and listed like that
and there was a big commotion because its not using a cog/lockring.

Hofweber 06-04-08 10:39 AM

yea I have it bookmarked it was so cool.

idiq 06-04-08 10:52 AM

Just curious, doesn't the lockring un-thread itself easier (on LSD) now?
