Group Rides

Like them, hate them?

Oh No 02-28-08 10:36 AM

i wasnt aware there were any group rides really. I like riding with my friends sometimes.

ahand 02-28-08 10:40 AM

i like riding with people, it's fun.

Zombie Carl 02-28-08 10:41 AM

I'm currently looking for some.

andre nickatina 02-28-08 10:45 AM

what kind of group rides?
come-one come-all relaxed fixed rides?
serious roadie training rides (that may include fg)?
fixed gear all-out rides wolfpack hustle style?

i'll go for the last one. i don't ride my bike in a relaxed manner therefore i don't really like slow relaxed rides. i wouldn't mind doing wolfpack.

shasta 02-28-08 10:49 AM

I ride in groups sometimes. As long as the other riders can hold an even pace and don't skid every 25 yards its cool.

MIN 02-28-08 11:04 AM

I ride my fixed gear on road group rides at times. (30-75 miles). People are generally amazed that I can hang with one gear ratio. Sometimes I cheat and take my feet off the pedals to coast down big descents - this is the single biggest drawback of riding fixed in a group ride setting.

dirtyphotons 02-28-08 11:08 AM

as with any group activity, it depends on the people.

we're lucky to have just about every type of group ride there is in dc. i like a few of them, and have been on plenty that i didn't enjoy. i think a lot of people get turned off to group rides because they have one or more experiences with the wrong group.

gehrkead 02-28-08 11:19 AM

we have a "group" ride here every thrusday night and go out for drinks afterwards. like 8 or so guys that ride fixed. i find riding with people a lot more enjoyable and safer than alone.

westokyo 02-28-08 11:20 AM

I guess I am the only one voted solo LOL
It's not that I don't like group rides. I just have never been on one.
Fixed gear riders around here are more "sesh"/trick guys and don't go out riding for the sake of riding.

frankstoneline 02-28-08 11:21 AM

We dont get "group rides" really around here but I enjoy mobbing around with a handful of others or even just one or two other folks.

caloso 02-28-08 11:25 AM

I have one that I go on fairly regularly but it's a balls-out race training ride. I don't ride my FG on that ride, but I have seen it done occasionally.

+1

except for the taking the feet off the pedals during descents. :D

666pack 02-28-08 11:42 AM

unless it's a friend of mine that i know is equally matched in skill i usually prefer to ride solo.
there's nothing i hate more than riding with someone else and looking back to see them a mile behind you on the trail.

and i really hate riding with large groups, because i find most human beings are pretty dumb, and whenever you get a large group together someone is gonna so something stupid.

Find yourself established weekly roadie training rides and just jump in.

skanking biker 02-28-08 11:47 AM

Have no friends that ride bikes and do not possess a road bike. Looking for "non-competitive" group rides---i.e. if I need to bring a computer along, I don't want to go.

+1 for people who can keep up. and i hate riding with a bunch of show offs doing balls to the stem skids and swerving side to side almost hitting everyone in the group and endangering themselves. i actually get really embarrassed. so i dont know. i vote for riding with a couple experienced riders.

Ok let me work on that.

skanking biker 02-28-08 12:01 PM

My usual "group ride":

*turn head over shoulder* "Honey, are you coming?"

"You're going too fast!"

"I can't slow down or I won't make it up the hill"

"You're being mean"

"What? I am trying to encourage you"

"You go too fast"

"I can't go any slower"

"I'm turning back"

"ok"

conor 02-28-08 12:08 PM

i enjoyed that exchange quite a bit. haha.

curiousincident 02-28-08 12:45 PM

rides with one or two friends at the same ability level as you are great. more people than that and some problem or another is likely to come up.

BRANDUNE 02-28-08 12:52 PM

I definately prefer long rides with just a couple friends, but group rides are a nice opportunity to meet people

doofo 02-28-08 12:55 PM

i dont like groups

and i dont like to ride

wheres that leave me
?
