Where to buy fixed conversions online?

Hi,
I've seen a lot of people on craigslist selling nice conversions from old road bikes.. and I also know of a few places that sell them all snazzed up with nice colors and what not. (like fixedgearfreak.com except they don't ship.. only sell locally)

Do you guys know of any places that sell custom built fixed gear bikes? Either conversions or new?

where do you live?
check your lbs. i've known of people to walk into an lbs with an old inherited road bike and end up with a nice conversion a week or so later.
the great thing about this-- assuming the shop's staff is good-- is you'll have a say in what the bike ends up being every step of the way.
keep in mind, you're not walking into a bike line or performance and getting that kind of service, but if you have a true lbs in your area i'd bet they'd be willing to help you out.

Most conversions I see for sale online are over-priced and of questionable quality. I'd just find an old frame and convert it yourself.

Well where do you live? Maybe someone knows a local spot in your town.

if you ever get down to santa cruz, stop in to his shop (it's bike shop santa cruz) he has a container in back FULL of old road frames, so many, I got frustrated and stopped searching after nearly 2 hours (and couldn't see the floor of the container yet!), but there's SO many cool old roadies in there.

he also does a nice job on conversions, is a quality bike mechanic (except I have to ask NOT to have loc-tite put on lockring threads), he stands behind the stuff he sells, and he will haggle, so you can get a GREAT deal on stuff, especially for a LBS.

he's always done right by me,...great guy/great shop.

(sorry for the shameless plug, but about half of all my bikes came from his shop)

I gotta chip-in with the others who're saying 'go to your lbs'. At mine, we don't do a whole lot of them (more of a family shop), but the ones we do are set up properly, with a lot of consideration to the rider's interests/needs as well as long-term durability. Yep, it's more costly. No doubt about it, but a good lbs'll get you set up right.

isn't the point of a conversion to learn to build and have fun doing it yourself? Not sure why you'd buy one unless it had some components that were worth more than the asking price.

Post up where you're at, I'm sure someone on the board can either suggest somewhere to go locally, or can help you convert. The people here (though a bit grumpy) can be a wonderful resource, so I would say do it yourself if you are willing to put in the time. Thrift store an old road bike, find a new back wheel/wheelset and then go at it. Sheldon Brown's website will provide with essentially everything you will ever need to know about bikes, may he rest in peace.
