is that the skin of some animal on your desk or are you scalping people?

trons 03-04-08 05:44 PM

i know it looks like a stem

mander 03-04-08 05:45 PM

Just superficially it looks like a beautiful, well finished and high end stem comparable to a nitto pearl. If you got it cheap then i figure you scored.

As old Rich told me "Its a gift" (cause he only charged me $5.00) Thanks for the info Mander ;)

NP---if you were wondering, the high end features I noticed are the fancy shaped and "DC" engraved nut for the bar clamp bolt, the "satin" finish (this is more expensive to produce than chrome), that style of quill expansion down at the bottom and the overall smoothness and attention to detail. Yeah you scored, I would quickly pay 20 for a nice stem like that (and im poor, utilitarian and cheap), and it might very well do much better on ebay. And it appears to be NOS---the wear looks like it's all from rubbing against other parts in a drawer or box.

If you want really informed answers to this question you should take it to C&V.

Edit: Have a look at what nos japanese stems are going for at peter white: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/stems.asp . I would not be at all surprised if yours is made by nitto because it looks so similar to a Pearl.

Hey! Wow! That Nitto Pearl is nice! and those prices! Im not trying to knock the Nitto but this stem seems to be made better? The fancy shaped "DC" engraved nut is much better fitting than any of the Pearl stems I saw in the pics!? Ill add this pic and you tell me if this is a true statment :)

Yeah definitely. It looks like the bolt on the pearls nut goes all the way through. Your stem is right up there with the nicest japanese stems, that's for sure. Too bad about the shop wear but maybe that's gods way of telling you to stop looking at it and get it on a bike. First though you may want to find out if it's some super rare and sought after item.

It looks really bad in the pics but in person it looks almost brand new!? I was thinking about slapping it on my Maserati but the Triple "T" looks great! :D maybe Ill save it for my first "real" fixie :)
