Why is fixed gear the new bmx?
I'm not criticizing it, but seriously, what makes people think its a good idea to do bar spins on a track bike?

I am sure they do it because they find it fun. I think the whole fixed gear tricks thing is boring as hell to watch, but that doesn't mean the people doing it aren't enjoying it.

SERIOUSLY PEOPLE
we already have this same argument going in the Mash thread. do we really need another?
it's 2008. people do tricks. you may not generally like it. hell, i think it's a bit dumb because most of the equipment is not tough enough to withstand that kind of stress. but it doesn't mean i go and ***** to every kid i see doing one.

because you can do tricks on it, and then ride 10 miles home pretty comfortably.

Kinda like an SUV vs. Geo Metro, if you get my drift. Gotta impress the ladies.
Bike size = ? size.

This isn't a rhetorical question. I am ASKING, what makes it so attractive to people that they want to do tricks on specifically TRACK BIKES.
Why not a road bike? Why not a cruiser? Why not a tall bike?

Well, I suppose that having forward and backward control of the rear wheel would help you do tricks.

I'm not saying all FG riders are like that of course... it's just a trend amongst a large population of them. I'm sure someone who fits the description is going think i'm some jackass for stereotyping but f*ck it... i got friends who fit the mold and its just an observation.

+1, more like 20 mph. Fixed gear riding is becoming the new urban sport, like bmx and skating already have become. but BMX and skate are very poor modes of transportation compared to a Fixed gear road bike.

You'd have to run all sorts of special parts to do barspins on a road bike. As far as tricks on a mountain bike hans rey was doing those in the 80's and 90s

Its the culture and fixed gear bikes are a trend for that culture much like how different types of skaters have different decks. You don't see the "punk" kids thrashin on a longboard right? Poor example but I think you might get my drift. Its just the in-thing for hipsters to ride FG and learn some tricks, get some ink, wear beanies, cycling caps, communista hats, hoodies, tight jeans, etc.

People are doing tricks on fixed gears because those are the bikes they're on. And they're on the fixed gear in the first place for the versatility.
