man i HATE flat tire more than i hate my stepdad!

i get this like once a week lately:mad:, i need to check whats wrong with my wheel n tire

how often do you guys get flat?

xylophonecks 03-07-08 10:55 AM

i haven't gotten a single flat since putting gatorskins on my bike. i love them.

mander 03-07-08 11:04 AM

OP just get some "armored" tires. Conti Gatorskins, Schwalbe Marathons, and Bontrager Racelite Hard Cases are all good. Never (or barely ever) getting flats makes you a lot faster.

conor 03-07-08 11:05 AM

two things i can think of:
1.) not properly inflated.
2.) there's some metal in your rim that's puncturing your tube. just run a cloth around the inside of the rim to clean it off, then retape it.

At least once a day.

Oh, I thought you said "How often do you fart?"

Flimflam 03-07-08 11:07 AM

Rule #1 of flats: Don't speak about flats.

I actually did a walk of shame last night, I've had a few (4 or 5 now between two bikes) this year, but so far so good now - I repaired a couple of tubes last night, need more patches and a couple new tubes for spares I carry on the road with me (always have one spare tube for roadside cases).

frankstoneline 03-07-08 11:07 AM

I got a pinch flat a couple days ago, but that took a couple months...

sp00ki 03-07-08 11:07 AM

since i started using bontrager racelite hardcases (over a year ago), i got one flat. one.

666pack 03-07-08 11:08 AM

You should not have written of this. You must make a sacrifice to this tire gods and no longer
utter the forbidden f-word.

ryansexton 03-07-08 11:10 AM

I've only flatted once in the few months I've been riding fixed. And I think one on another bike.

sp00ki 03-07-08 11:12 AM

yet you've crashed like twenty times..
go figure.

Crast 03-07-08 11:15 AM

Whenever I carry my CO2 inflator head, spare tube, my cell phone, my lucky 20 dollar bill, and my credit card, I never get a flat. I've only got a flat if I forgot any one or more than one of those things.

More seriously, I've gotten 1 flat in 6 months.

shasta 03-07-08 11:20 AM

I've had one flat in the last six months and that was because I ran over a nail.

tarman 03-07-08 11:24 AM

I've flatted once in two years of daily commuting/fun riding. I also don't skid, and check my tire pressure every three or four days.

RaeFixie 03-07-08 11:27 AM

i suck

Northwestrider 03-07-08 11:27 AM

Rarely do I flat anymore. I used to have that knurled ring that screws onto the valve stem, tightened too much against the rim and would end up with a leak at the base of the stem. Once I learned to keep the ring loose I have not have that problem. Another thing is that I tend to not ride on the far edge of the road. I tend to ride very close to the white line, often times to the left of it.

camashtorcal 03-07-08 11:35 AM

I've been running gatorskins and slime lite tubes for the past 6 months without a flat. I think my setup may be overkill but in the burbs there's no buses, trains, and/or taxis to bail me out if the unfortunate happens.

dayvan cowboy 03-07-08 11:55 AM

I got 1 flat about 3 days after I got my Mark V with the stock tires, but I think it was improperly inflated.

My friend and I went on a long ride on the bike path that runs through our campus and right before we left he asked me if I had an extra tube, but when he remembered he didn't have his CO2 thing, he just said **** it. Needless to say, he got a flat 10 miles away from town and we had a nice walk.

MIN 03-07-08 12:00 PM

I have never had a flat on my fixed gear.

Rob1900 03-07-08 12:02 PM

I run Schwalbe Marathons, not a single flat since i put them on over 6 months ago, had a hard time getting them on but it was well worth it.

doofo 03-07-08 12:08 PM

ive flatted once in more than six months (was a pinch due to a train track)

most days i ride light race type tires too

fetch 03-07-08 01:02 PM

for me, my personal experience wasnt with tires, ive always ridden gatorskins, it was with the TUBES.

gatorskins with bontrager tubes I would get pinchflats atleast twice a month. i changed the PSI from 120, 110, 100, then up to 115. still pinch flats. this continued for about 5 months, spending money on patch kits and new tubes.

anyway, i switched to continental tubes and after that i haven't had a flat in 8 months!(my streak broke 2 weeks ago when those stupid iron "patch-me-up" construction plates on the road gave me two flats, put some orange paint or a cone f*ckheads !!!). this is my belief, my superstition. i only ride continental tubes.

SHORT ANSWER: try changing the brand of your tube?

wroomwroomoops 03-07-08 01:31 PM

The only flat I had was because I foolishly tried to re-use a tyre someone left at the entrance of our apartment building. I later found that the tyre had a little piece of glass lodged in.

But that was the only flat in 2 years. I use Schwalbe puncture protected tyres (Marathon are not the only ones) of one kind or the other. The trend is so incredibly good that I'll start leaving part of my tools at home even for the long-distance rides.
