rae, at high speeds if you were to turn your wheel enough to hit your foot, you'd crash anyway.

once you get going a little bit turns are more about leaning to one side or the other, as mentioned above

Turning at high speed and having the wheel cranked over enough to hit your pedal-line = you're going off the bike, quickly. Pedal strike ought to be more a concern in this situation than toe overlap. I have massive overlap on two of my bikes, it only becomes an issue when trackstanding or low-speed messing about.

When you corner at speed, you turn less and lean more - shouldn't be as much of a big deal than when low-speed manouevering... there was recently a toe overlap thread here as well as Sheldons' expert advice.

No it's not possible. Toe overlap is only an issue at very low speeds. When going fast you can't turn that hard. Try touching your toeclip to your tire---you couldn't get your bike to that point even turning at a slow-moderate speed.

ok well this is my imagination...
what if you are in the middle of a little traffic and you go not too slow and not too fast (enough for your foot to hit your tire), then you have to do a sharp turn to pass cars when you turn you hit your tire and you fall... then a bus is behind you, he cant see you since bus is tall... and psrrrrttttt you become a grounded beef..hooray!

If you think you might do this, just don't give yourself the opportunity.

You really have to be going slow to turn your wheel enough for toe-strikes, which means in your imagined scenario, traffic *should* be slow enough/stopped if it actually ever did happen.

If you have the desire, find a grass field and take some sweaters/markers and try some tight cornering drills to experiment with the limits.

If else, just go ride and don't worry about it.

learn how to time your movements with regard to your pedal positions. or you can toe up and toe down to get through it.

ok cool, then use small clips.

i wouldn't have any overlap with large clips and a 63cm road frame either. i'm giving you an example of a combination which gives no overlap.

there are some factor you can change to minimize overlap.

mine is SO close (1/8th"), but never hits the tire no matter how I do it

and the rest are right, going faster than 2mph, it's not an issue even if the tire does hit the clip, because you're countersteering and leaning, not turning the bars at a 30 degree angle.

I got different clips with a shorter toe reach (smaller size?) which kinda sucks, because I can only fit converse all stars in them, if I wear my work boots, or hiking shoes, they only go in about halfway.

I imagine it's alot worse with some of the track bikes I see posted in here and FG gallery, some of those have SUCH close wheel/frame/fork clearances it's crazy.

actually counter steering works there is an article on sheldon browns site on it. there is the shorter crank or toe clip option. or lock or your back mid turn i do that a bit

If it is that much of a problem, replace your 165/170mm cranks with some lil'tyke 100mm ones. Or go buy a hybrid.

You make it seem like turning while going fast doesn't require steering with the front wheel, and turning while going slow doesn't require countersteering. The front wheel is still turning in a high speed turn; just not very much, because you aren't turning in a very tight radius. You have to slow down to turn tightly, and at that point it's still physically impossible to turn the bike without countersteering to get the bike out from under you so you can falling to one side or another.
