Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

If it has a freewheel it coasts. Just make sure you have two brakes.

It should come ready to go once you put on the wheels, stem/bars, and pedals.

If you have any doubts, have a knowledgeable friend, co-op, or bike shop check it out before you ride.

According to BD's site, the bike ships with a freewheel, although it doesn't say what size.

If you don't like the gearing, you will need another. More teeth will mean an easier gear to push, but if you choose one too big, you will have to get a new chain.

You might wish to contact BD to see what size you will be getting and if it ships installed or not.

Once you get it (the bike,) revisit Sheldons site. Read it, all of it. Then you can be the one with answers.

Wow, de ja vue here. I just posted this yesterday elsewhere.

When you get the Messenger, you will have to assemble it. The freewheel will not be attached to the hub, but the fixed cog will. Put a thin coat of grease on the threads, then screw the freewheel on with the removal notches facing out. Don't cross thread. Pedaling will tighten it down more.

You could also pay a shop to do the assembly. I charge $69.99+ tax.

Word. Go get educated so that you can have an intelligent discussion about the details.
