Questions: About tires for skidding.

I skid daily.
A ton of skidding actually, it's pretty fun.
Even alone, I'm not one of those people that skid just to show off.

I'm currently using an Armadillo rear tire, but the skid patch is forming and I've had the tire for 2 days! I'm wondering if I should replace it soon, or just stop skidding on it.
And I'm also wondering if you sexy members of BF could refer me to some tires that'll last longer when it comes to skidding.
And yes, I know tires aren't meant for skidding whatsoever.

what gear you got and what cog?

bill brasky once banned himself from his own website for insulting the moderator. fungis knows better than to kick a turd on a hot day.

Can't just get some advice?
I get troll and flames?

Anyone want to give me a serious answer? Thanks.

teiaperigosa 03-11-08 12:27 PM

the serious answer is......

SKID as much as possible....don't worry about the patches...they make you gully

hipsters will give you props when you pop a tire from skidding through it

word

try matching your cog and chainring so the numbers don't have a common denominator (see chart above). if you have the frame clearance, try a larger touring tire with a kevlar belt. i swear by panaracer tserv. one tserv got me through a year of s.f. commuting sans brakes.

Personally, I try to avoid skids at all costs. However, I can offer you my observation that Armadillos aren't a good choice if you enjoy skidding. They have a soft rubber layer over a harder plastic layer for puncture protection. I had Armadillos on my roadie as winter tires. During a group ride, there was a crash and I went into a full-panic skid at 27mph that took off a 5 inch long skid patch deep into the puncture layer. I just threw that tire out.

QUESTION:
I just went through a tire from skidding (mainly because it was my first tire and I was practicing learning how to do it). I have a 48/16 (3.0) ratio, and apparently there is only one skid patch with this ratio. Does that mean that there is basically one spot on the tire that gets rubbed away?

sorry to slow the jerkstore party for everyone.

no, the more you skid...the more you deserve skid patches...they are the reward....period

First off. This gets discussed (at least) once a week here. There is a search function.
Second. People around here like, gatorskins, soma everware etc. (except for thunderchuncky. He likes search but those are hard to find) I have the soma's and they are holding up fine, but are like $45 a piece. You should also invest in a 17 tooth cog. 17 skid patches will help a lot.
Third. There is a search function.

one per side, so technically two.

ps, i have no idea how this works whatsoever. voodoo science imo, but i still chose my ratio (47x16) because patch calculators told me it gives 16. best combo in my desired gearinch range.

if you drop to a 47 from a 48 (hardly noticeable), you'll increase your skid patches sixteen times.

armadillos suck.

fungis 03-11-08 12:51 PM

vittoria randonneur.

don't forget to rotate you wheel.

as in, take it off the bike, turn it a bit then put it back on. it'll change the skid patch position so your tire lasts longer. ya know?

Thanks man. These cranks are kinda long too, I always clip them on corners, so this upgrade will be good in more than one way. One issue I'm having is finding 47t chainrings and cranks... so maybe I'll switch my back cog to a 17...
