i work with a guy who has 6 broken and displaced ribs (see video of incident here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RCEwT6dqa8). he only missed a month of work. i don't know how he does it. i think he slept in a lazy-boy chair for 3 months or more. doc says the ribs will probably never re-connect. at end of vid is his x-ray.

so i feel for you - heal quick.

Some bony elbowed teenage kid broke one of my ribs during an indoor soccer match. I couldn't do a goddamn thing for over a month. It hurt to sit down. It hurt to stand up. Don't even try laying down or coughing. I hated my life and I wanted to die.

When I broke my clavicle I had to sleep with a broomstick down my spine for like 2 months.

Then I broke that sh** again. Damn I hate my collarbone.

I feel your pain, I was trying to boogie board with a wooden skim board one time...it sank, nose got stuck in the sand, and a wave smashed me onto the back. Two bruised, one cracked, and nothing the doctors could do.

Oh, and the other day my world history teacher was walking through a crosswalk and some biker hit her dog, broke two of the dogs ribs and knocked my teacher down. She hit the curb and broke the same two ribs on the same side. Guy was a jackass about it too.

Anyway, it sucks, hope you feel better. Milk the doctor for some good pain pills.

funny, the chest doesn't have any visible marks on it, but the area is toe up on the inside. (i've damaged ribs before and know the injury pretty well these days... unfortunately).
i think i hit the chest strap buckle of my bag on my handlebars when i went down.

anyway, here is what's left of the bruised thigh that slammed into my stem. couldn't walk right for 3 days. it felt like someone shot me with a railroad tie:

On a similar note: I fell down hard on my side about three weeks ago while drunkenly doing a wheelie. The bruise is gone but I have some weird hard lumps in the flesh right over my pelvic bone. It doesnt hurt really but it is weird and creeps my girlfriend out when she touches me there. Anybody else ever have this?

Three times the fun for me! I had two ribs "displaced" when my daughter (then 15) was testing out my then rock hard abs by jumping up and down on them! I was fine till she decided to use my ribs for the dismount! OUCH! A few years later I cracked four ribs in a bike crash, then I cracked three more when we were responding to a row home fire! I was in the cabin of the engine trying to pull the scba over my shoulder when the driver decided to make a very fast left turn, he made it but I flew to the right fast and hard! I slam my ribs hard against the engine compartment! CRACK! three more
EDIT: bonelesschicken, I just saw your post, have it checked out as after my second "mishap" I ended up having bruises under my ribs that quickly became infected! The doc described them as hard lumps beneath my ribs and they affected my breathing more than the busted ribs!

I'm surprised no one mentioned this:

when I cracked some ribs during my karate days, the sensei (teacher) would take a piece of corrugated cardboard and some athletic tape, and literally tape the cardboard patch over the cracked rib area.
make sure the cardboard is big enough so you tape it to the good strong un-bashed ribs adjacent to the cracked/bruised one.

sounds like a joke but IT WORKED!,..almost no pain when you cough, or laugh (try that now!) the only thing was removing the tape before a shower was kinda a beach.

but for the pain relief it gave when it was on, it was worth it

check it out.

I got a bone-bruise on my hip one night while skating. When I got home I had a tennis ball size lump. The lump went down after a few days, then I got the most horrid looking bruise ever. It changed from red to purple to black before it literally sank down my leg over the next couple months. It finally disappeared just around my knee. For about 9 months to a year after that, if I ever so slightly bumped my hip on anything i would crumple to the ground in pain, and even screamed a couple times. Didn't stop me from skating though.
