Value of a Miyata Pista?
 

Hi, all -

I'm pondering selling off my mid-80s vintage Miyata Pista to subsidize another build. It's in very good shape, other'n a few scuffs from the ensuing 20-odd years. Needs some new sew-ups, too. But the bike's seen maybe ten miles of riding, total.

Any idea of it's value?

what kind of tubing is it made out of? i'm interested in those things, mostly because i have no further info about miyata's production of track frames, but i've seen several of them on the street. decent looking frames.

There's a pro-ridden one around these parts that's been languishing on craigslist and ebay for $650-750, I believe (edit: that's the one V). The tubing is just basic cro-mo (hiten fork, too, I think?). I'd say $450-500 complete would be fair. However, with the way the market is now, you can probably get a little more. $600 would probably be the max I'd pay if I found one in my size tomorrow, mainly because I'm looking for a new ride. There were two miyata pistas, in my understanding, a Team version and a regular version. I don't know what tubing each one was made from but I presume the Team version would have been of the Triple-Splined double-butted stuff that Miyata made. I saw a complete Team version go for $950 on eBay a few months ago but it was in pristine shape, practically unridden.

A non-Team model was listed on eBay a couple of weeks ago and it sold for $515 but the seller has now listed it on the Seatle CL for $750, I doubt he will get it, even though it is in good condition. The same frame that is on the Seattle CL was offered to me NOS a couple of years ago for $400 but it wasn't my size and I thought he wanted too much for it.

Do you have some pics? I am sure you can get a pretty penny for it if it is in good shape, Miyata made some very high quality stuff.

I think thats a really good looking bike. The Hi-ten does kind of turn me off though. I am actually surprised that it didn't sell on the eBay.

Yep, I like it too. Miyata made their own tubing and their quality control would have been very high. And I would guess that the same guys who made the tubes made the bikes, so it really isn't in the same league as the reguler Hi-ten stuff we are all familiar with, perhaps that lack of knowledge is why it didn't go past $515. I would say it is a good buy at $515 but the seller's reserve is obviously much higher.

Thanks for the info, guys. FWIW, mine measures out to about 56cm, but since the Pista wasn't offered as a 56 (that I'm aware of), it must be a 57. Double-butted CroMoly tubing. I'll post some pictures later today.

Now I have to commit to selling it. We finally live within driving distance of a nice velodrome, but alas, I think my dreams of track glory are behind me... :(

An old team mate of mine raced a Miyata Pista . He loved that bike more than life itself. He also kicked all of our @sses on it every time we were at the track! You sure you want to sell it? :D

I'm not sure if i could part with my Miyata, i pulled it out off the fence of my rental house(had been there for a couple years before i moved in), cleaned her up(switched out the wheels and bars), and looks and ride like a million bucks.

Yeah, it's a hard decision. I love the bike, always have. Used to work at a bike shop as a teenager, and was way into Nelson Vails. Bought the Pista with big plans, but haven't been on it in years. And money's tight now, plus that Bianchi Axis frame is sitting there all component-less... :rolleyes:

It's all stock (except for the Look PP186s, and I've got the original pedals somewhere...), and I think I'll spend some time with some rags and some Mother's to buff out the odd scuffs. There's a little pitting on the headset, and it needs new sew-ups.

Wish I'd taken it on a track at least once...

It is in great shape, I bet you could get $650 or so on your local CL, more dependant on where you live. Nice.

The NOS frame/fork that I was offered was a 56.5cm size, so maybe that is why it seems like a 57cm frame to you...

Well, I'm on the fence now - the Mother's is shining it up nicely. Maybe I'll try to sell off that camera instead...

Definitely sell the camera. That way you'll spend more time riding bicycles, and less time as an amatuer bicycle model for the internet generation.


You WILL regret giving that bike away. You can't just walk into a store and buy clean, original vintage.


(Imagine little NJS stamps or cociane-filled tubes if it helps you value your own stuff).


Value and worth are often incongruent.
