Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

There's some really both decent and hilarious stuff there!

Actually on this topic I've been wondering how effective RFID would be for at least identification of stolen merchandise like a bike. It'd be pretty easy to Krazay Glue a RFID tag or device INSIDE your tube, and I think it'd be more effective than having the local police look for a specific serial at a specific store. All they'd need is an RFID reader to sweep a big cache of bikes for example.

I spent about 2 hours making a presentation for this contest, until I decided to say **** it. My presentation basically just said that most bikes that get stolen are stolen because of ignorance of how and what equipment to use to lock up properly. There are some locking points around here that have a decal with instructions on how to lock a bike properly. That was the only real-world concept I came up with, and it already exists.

Oh and folding bikes are an exisiting solution too. Though I'd never ride a folder.

I like the net concept.

Im glad some group is exploring this. But honestly im not seeing many of theses ideas as being superior to a good old u-lock.

I would like to see some concepting as far as bike lockers facilities as well. So you could cycle to a destination without a lock. Then using some kind of bike rack-lock combo you could have it safely leave it there, maybe with a security camera in the vicinity too.

Wow. Good read. Two good ideas: resizeable U-lock and parking meter specific lock. All the rest can be cracked faster than they can be explained.

I mean, it's great that people are thinking like this, but since cable locks are useless, 70% of them fail to launch.

My favorite:
One very strong magnet is permanently placed on the rim of the rear wheel. When the bike is "locked," another magnet is attached to the rim of the front wheel. The magnets are positioned so that the opposite poles are facing eachother. Because the magnets are very strong, their attraction prevents the wheels from turning.
