wow that is pretty good!

that's so fake

i think they look cool, however there are some drawbacks to what looks cool and what performs. I had 2 set of Zipp 404 and a set of deep reynolds. Sold them all recently. Using aero wheels in a race certainly has benefits, and are noticeable when moving. But having a heavy aero wheel up front alone will serve no real purpose other than vanity. Especially if riding around town in short burst ( light to light ) but in a Time Trial the benefits when up to speed may present an advantage. Would I waste this kind of money for a glorified town bike? No, but I would not fault someone else for doing it. i Think they look cool.
Trendy = yes Cool= yes logical= no since when does logic and bikes have anything to do with each other. |
pricewise, i dunno, whatever people wanna say. my phil/deepv combo was about the same price as my aerospoke. sure, a formula/deep v or formula/dp18 would be way cheaper, but whatever.
but really, **** just looks fly. |
This is like asking why people buy Coach bags, or expensive shoes, or trick out their v-tec hondas or whatever.
It does look fly, and it does increase performance in certain areas. Totally necessary and logical? Not entirely. Awesome? Yes. |

so these are all carbon wheels, which is why its so pricey right? for street use, couldn't someone come up with some hard plastic ones (like 80's bmx mags were) ? iff they could make them strong enough tto work, it wouldn't really matter about the quality of the wheel for racing situations since fashioncentric bikers can have their cheaper plastic wheel, and racers can have their carbon. opinions?

Uhh...aren't arrospok's palstic?
|
TupperWearSpoke?
|
haha, something like that yeah.

Create one that you can take off the front wheel , open it up ... put in cream, sugar, ice, salt , and ingredients to taste ... go ride , et voila. Take wheel off , open it up and Ice Cream for everyone!!! Until then I'll still to my Luddite wheels.

The real reason is..
I'm a bike messanger in NYC.
The reason one some of us use mag wheels in the front is because it's easier to throw a chain through a million time a days. If you do this with spokes yours will bend. Most bike messangers in NYC use a hardened steel 10mm chain and a American Lock Brand padlock. You can't bar twist them like a u lock, harder to cut with angle grinder because it's not stable, and very hard to cut with bolt cutters. Everything in the bike world has a purpose except cards in the spokes. Top tube padding is not to protect your jewels it's for slinging your bike over your shoulder so as to not to hurt your it from constantly doing it on stairs within the nyc Sunway system. If the esculators are out or you have mad stairs your going to wish you had it. It's all common sense. |
^ I will agree with the spokes thing. Recently took my Aerospoke off but I do miss being able to quickly lock it up and not have to worry about the spokes and the lock at all. They are also pretty tough so if you do go off curbs and pop over potholes etc you won't knock the wheel out of true. Personally I enjoy the ride of an Aerospoke up front. They spin smoothly and freely and will spin for quite a long time.

Don't be fooled, the Aerospokes are the farthest thing from aero that you can get.
Not the ones that say Nimble on them. ;) |

how do those mag wheels that look like aero spokes ride? Do they have any redeeming qualities besides being easy to lock up
|
Not unless you're going 60 mph down hill.
