velocity fusions vs mavic open pro

i need new rims. basically my phil wood wheelset is way too heavy for me. I've got deep vs that i want to replace. I thought about going to fusions (had them before). I need strength and lightness and the open pros are lighter. i just need to know if they're as strong as fusions. if anyone has had both, which did they like? I ride/climb hills and city streets so aero isnt important to me.

Ep3licious 03-23-08 10:52 PM

what about aeroheads ?

zelah 03-23-08 10:58 PM

yeah what about aeroheads

my wife's got them, but i weigh 230 and abuse my bikes. i think they're not strong enough but i may be wrong. they are the lightest.

I've ridden fusions, aeroheads and open pros. In my experience, mavic (OP and CXP22) have been the most durable. I've had almost every one of my velocity rims develop significant sidewall dents from pothole trauma, but the mavics keep going. I doubt I'll ever buy another velocity rim.

Been riding pretty much everything. Open pros are another league of rims. They are welded, and have double eyelet reinforcements which make them stronger than the fusions.

50 grams heavier than the open pros and the same weight as the fusions you have the cxp33, which is noticeable stronger than open pro and fusion. Without comparison the most durable rim i have ever ridden.

Just a quick note on aero rims, they actually weighs a few gram more than the open pros.

wrong.

If you mean aero's then yeah, but not what the convo is about.

edit: to the OP, consider DT 1.1 or 1.2 (little heavier.) Never had 'em but reviews are awesome.

I think those DT swiss 1.2s are actually even heavier than deep v. but yeah nice looking wheels. i don't know much about the 1.1s but i read 2 bad reviews and that was enough. Fusions are only a little lighter. I really think I'll be getting the OP cds for an all-black light yet strong wheelset. I just thought I'd ask 1 last time so that if anyone thought the OPs were weak they could say.

My mistake.

I actually was talking about the aerohead. As your own link states they weigh app. the same. I have had them on my own scale, and the aerohead was a few grams heavier.

It sounds like wheels might not be the place to shave some weight ;)

I'm only half joking. On 250lbs of rider and bike a pound or so won't make an appreciable difference and if the issue is climbing and spinning up to speed, I bet 1 gear inch would make a much bigger difference than 1 lb on the rims. Just something to think about.

mattface 03-24-08 09:10 AM

I've got no experience with the Fusion, but I built a set of Open Pro 32 spoke 3x wheels for my Soma Rush. They've seen some hard bumps, lotsa potholes, gone up a few curbs and even been ridden under-inflated over the past couple of years, and they've never even needed a minor truing. Fore reference I weigh 200, and cary a pretty heavy bag. If you're really worried about it build 36 spoke wheels, but the 32s have been good for me.

Well, if you know something about DT Swiss 1.1s, go ahead and enlighten us.

Internet or not (print media, word of mouth, etc). If I hear plural legitimate-sounding problems with a product, I move on to the many other choices. Also, if I hear or read differently later, I reconsider. I did that even before the internet.

Peedtm 03-24-08 03:13 PM

Well, I asked the head mech at my shop for a nicer alternative to aeroheads to lace up to Dura-Atchee hubs and he suggested. . .wait for it. . .1.1's!

So now you've heard 1 positive one.

The problems i read about the 1.1s were about cracking eyelets. did you end up using those?

el twe 03-24-08 03:37 PM

Mavic CXP 33s are ****ing bombproof.

I asked about 5 days ago. I don't even have the hubs purchased yet.

I'll let ya know next summer though ;)

thenewblk 03-24-08 05:08 PM

now that someone has mentioned them, how are the aeros (not the aeroheads)?

other than being a nice looking rim.

anomaly 03-24-08 06:10 PM

Open Pro or DT Swiss RR 1.1 are the best options in a non-aero or deep rim.

+1. But even 200 grams/ 1/2 lb saved will represent a dramatic reduction in rim burliness. That's the difference between a set of A719s (Mavic's nicest heavy duty loaded touring/ trekking/ 29er rims, about 560 gms each) and a set of open pros (450 grams each). At your weight, 1/2 lb is around two tenths of one percent of your total bike and rider weight. Adding whatever you're carrying on your back, water bottles, etc makes it even less.

And that's a far larger drop in weight than what youre thinking of. The difference between your current set of deep vs (500 grams each) and a set of open pros is only 100 grams. So, what youre proposing is a weight reduction of somewhere under a tenth of 1%. I dunno if losing that will get you up the hills much faster, but it will probably make your wheels substantially weaker.

Peedtm 03-24-08 06:32 PM

Very well stated. I wish you got the OP weight right, though.

:) Hooters weighs 230, and his bike weighs somewhere around 20---that's where I'm getting the 250 figure.

Ambrosio Excellence.

I've heard some horror stories about sudden sidewall failure on the Ambrosio Excellence rims.
