tire recommendation - 700x35, no skidding
 

I'm looking for a good tire for my new build, 700x35, and this will be single-speed, so no skids. I'll be doing mostly city commuting, with a little trail riding on hard-pack dirt. I think I'd like a little bit of tread, but not a full on studded cyclocross style tire, so that I can still get along on the streets alright. I know I can get cheapo Kenda from Nashbar for under $10 a piece, but I've had bad luck with cheap Kenda's being slippery in the past. What would you recommend?

Yea... single-speed cyclocross is the way I've been rolling. Currently using Maxxis Raze... have enough knob for offroading and not too much for street riding, but then again I haven't really tried anything else.

I rode some pretty nice Michelin cross tires most of the winter that were 700x30 but I'm sure they come in bigger sizes.

That the kind of tread you're thinking about?

That Maxxis Raze looks a little bit too aggressive and that Michelin probably looks right on, I'd have to find it in 700x35.

Vittoria Randonneur!

Vittoria Randonneur looks real good - can anyone compare to the cheaper Panaracer Pasela? Randonneur looks to be about $29/each, while the Pasela can be had for $12.99 - what do you get from the Randonneur for the extra $$?

I think it's because the Vittorias have puncture resistant liners. I know that's why the paselas are 13 bucks, but the pasela tgs are 30

Continental Contact Security. It's like a Gatorskin, but comes with some tread. Also it only comes in 37c.

I second the suggestion for the Continental Contact. I have 28's on one of my bikes and really like them. They run a bit narrow (well my 28's do, about a 27 at proper inflation) Looks like they come in 32 and 37 size. Maybe the 37 runs a bit narrow as well...? They roll well and have just enough tread. There are not cross tires for sure. I've been happy with them.

The paselas come in a tourguard version with a kevlar belt, $18 for steel bead, maybe $26 for the kevlar bead. Nice tires, been running them for a while now.

the contact security is probably overkill..."built to hold up in factory conditions"..whatever than means and probably doesn't roll with a ****. I have top contacts and really like em. Available in sizes between 28-47 mm.

The city contact looks nice too, but not as all-purpose.

I've been running Ritchey Speedmax for years on my do-it-all fixed gear crosscheck. Most miles are on road/dirt road combos but I've run it on plenty of singletrack that was anywhere from buff dirt to lots of rocks. The tires play well in a lot of conditions.

i just put some freebie 35mm tires on my conversion. wow, it totally rules! as soon as i wear out these forte cross tires (which is taking longer than i though honestly. and i skid a lot) i'm gonna snag some of the tires you guys have listed.
