HOW TO turn overpriced mks rx-1 track pedals into overpriced mks rx-1 platforms!
(disclaimer: this isn't as much a howto as it is a pictorial of a product i purchased)
Awhile ago, a thread was started by a user questioning the differences between rx-1, nuevos and customs.
In typical ssfg style, the thread deteriorated into an argument over the practicality of using rx-1 in the street.
I won't go into the details, but in the end i contemplated using the cleats designed for use with the rx-1 pedals as add on "platforms". Lucky for me, $22 was well within my impulse-buy range.
A few days later, these arrived:
It immediately became apparent that i made the right decision. While the cleats didn't "snap" into place, they were snug enough for me to go on a ~4 mile ride without coming off.
That said, i wanted to ensure that they wouldn't come off in mid sprint or skid, so i grabbed this:
And did this:
Followed by this:
I gave everything about twenty minutes to dry and harden. The result was a snug fit that took quite a bit of force to remove.
After spending twenty more minutes peeling away the remains of the dried glue, i glued it again (this time leaving well enough alone).
The cleat adds a nice fit to the rx-1. The end of the cleat is level with the toeclip:
There's texture on the top of the cleat which provides a nice grippy surface; i've never slipped on a "naked" rx-1, but im sure some might find this to be useful:
Ok, that's it. If you already ride rx-1 and would like your pedals to be more platformish without buying platform pedals, this might be something to look into.
It should be mentioned that the cleats add material to the pedal and subsequently add snuggness to your existing clip/strap fit.
Enjoy/flame/etc.

those aren't them... i don't remember where i got them, actually. it was a long time ago, before i formulated my existing opinion about leather products.
i just bought the oppy 4x gates, and remembered i had them so i figured "why not".
Straps are straps though; i'm sure there are a billion campy jawns out there that work well.

By the way, I really want to flame you 'cos it seems silly to spend $120 on a janky fred-like pedal conversion but the reality of pedals in 2008 is that I can't think of any platforms that accept clips/straps apart from GR9s. So, I guess there is some reasoning behind it. (Though I would've saved the $90 and bought GR9s, or just used the pedals with stiffer soled shoes)
So anyway, if anyone wants to chime in and inform me of platforms for clips/straps, please do. I'd like that very much.

I put wellgo jr bmx platforms on my felt tk2. I just had to bend the edges of the clips where they mount to the pedal to get them to mount on the inside of the pedal. Otherwise, mks gr-9's are the way to go for riding on the street in my opinion.

Same width as sylvan track, but with serrated edges like the mks touring.
They're ridable on both sides, which is the reason I got them,

i've got those on my grocery bike.
same issue as the rx-1, et al-- the spindle is lower than the cages, so you end up riding on the cage edge.
not a problem, but it's not a platform per se.

Those rx-1s are ridiculous.
Blickblocks, you want MKS Touring or Touring Lite pedals. I have a serious love for the Touring Lites.

BMX/MTB platforms with pegs are super comfortable with clips/straps. I'm thinking of putting some on my conversion, along with fenders to make it a rain bike. This way I can keep the straps pretty loose for easy bailing out without having to worry about my feet slipping off of the pedals.

It's anything but janky. It rides stronger + more comfortable than you'd think (at least moreso than i initially expected).

I'm amazed at the bonding strength of a craft glue gun here.
I'd of used epoxy and even then predicted visions of me riding away from falling clips like a young Forest Gump running out of his braces ensue.
I've entertained cutting a pattern of my insoles and slipping something like a thin sheet of a PVC compound underneath them for the longer days in my pedals. I got the idea from some Jason Jessee leather vans that came with an extra pair of insoles that had steel shanks from ball to heel so that the shoe wouldn't flex and support better on highway pegs.

1) that's what i thought initially, but i rode them with no glue whatsoever and they were stuck in there, didn't come loose once (i made sure to come out of my pedal at every red light to test it). the cleats are designed to keep the rider's foot from moving in or out of the clip. that's the only movement it should be subjected to, so it's actually fine. but i took the extra precaution of using the hot glue. like i said, it took quite a bit of prying to get it off of the pedal-- a type/ammount of force the cleat will never see when riding. it'll be fine, i'm confident of that.
2) yeah, i almost did something similar, actually.
a friend with access to shop machines cut an outline of my (then) sneaker soles (not insoles; these were going on the bottom) out of plexiglass. my plan was to glue a thin layer of rubber onto them and use them on longer rides.
but then nike left the cycling game and i got a too-insane-to-pass-up deal on some really great road shoes.
clipless on anything longer than 60 miles is worth the fifteen minutes of time spent swapping out pedals imo.
