Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Someone explain this weird toeclip thing from YellowJersey

https://www.yellowjersey.org/how2clip.html

"The end of the strap is tucked in so it's never very secure." Huh? What? Are they saying it's better to NOT tuck in the end of the strap?

Yeah, you cinch them down after you're in, which is more secure than having to have them loose enough to easily get in and out of. So more secure, just like laces on your shoes are more secure than having an elasticized tongue. The tongue will always be the same, the laces can make the shoe much tighter.

Yes, they are saying don't tuck in the strap as the clip will not be tight if you do. Toe clips are meant to be tightened down before you ride, giving you more power transfer.

How would you get your foot in? Imagine tightening your belt, THEN putting your pants on.....

I mean put foot in, tighten, tuck strap in. Ya, it's hard to do that with the second foot unless you're propped up against something...but you can at least do it with the first foot.

Why would you tuck it in? How do you plan on getting your foot out when you stop?

Then what is the point of having a place to tuck it in? God, this is wrecking my brain.

Honestly, who cares? Use your toe clips however you wish.

That's the best joke I read here in quite a while.

If you tighten your straps, don't tuck them in. You will fall over when you stop and be really embarrassed. Do what the website says, they're correct. I never tuck in my straps, ever.

Can't we all just agree that when you're competing on the track (and have an assistant to hold you before and after the race), you'd want to tighten and tuck in to ensure maximum thrust.
And when you're out on the street posing with your Nagasawa, you'd want the straps open and loose to avoid any embarrasing falls.

Something tells me that the straps weren't developed in the first place for street-use.

Maybe we'll see new stuff on the scene?

Straps were developed for everything use. More than a few road cyclists still use clips/straps with slotted cleats.

i can't believe people who just slip a shoe into straps without tightening. talk about getting the least from your gear. i always tugged my straps as tight as i can get them.

I'd actually like to see someone struggling to tuck em in while they're riding. Coastie, ok, fixed, ain't happening.

These campy straps have nowhere to tuck the ends in.
In fact, because of the screw in buttons at the end, they're impossible to tuck in even if there was a place. I cut them down to reduce extra material, which allows for easy on-the-fly tightening which is great for fixed.
