soma everwear tires

Any reviews or opinions about the soma everwear tires? Heard the sidewalls blow out, and that they have poor construction.

frankstoneline 04-05-08 04:35 PM

they are probably the most durable tire for skipping and skidding you can find. I havent heard anything about poor construction or sidewall blowouts.

ran 1700miles on mine. both are squared off completely and sidewall is just starting to show some cracking but still running fine. I've had maybe 5 flats so far and been pretty pleased. If you don't keep your PSI up your sidewalls will fail from what I've seen but keep them up and your fine as I have been. I will say that they are heavy and I don't really like the compound on cornering very much. But, if you plan on skidding a good amount, i.e. you're new to fixed I'd go with them and then when you get over the novelty of skidding switch to a lighter harder tire. but overall I've been pleased just won't do them again because I am over skidding every time I have to slow down.

for the money i'd rather have gatorskins. last awhile, ride nicer, never had a problem with them.
everwears blew out at the sidewall for me. i ride 100-120psi typically.
if i'm paying for tires i usually opt for serfas seca in the rear though. these days a certain shop hooks up the free, slightly used tires though.

if you're down for skidding you'll be fine with them. they'll probably last you twice as long as a 20 dollar tire, so that'll work.

what about eh vittoria rubino pro???

Oh No 04-06-08 07:02 AM

they're good. i've been getting mine used from another member on here and i still haven't blown out the first one. sidewalls are okay so far. solid tire.

LoRoK 04-07-08 12:05 AM

I had cracks in my sidewalls after a month. They ride like ****. Cornering sucks hard. But, hey, you can skid on them a ton and not worry about them. I'm pretty happy with my gatorskins now though. Much better ride and cornering.

thousandsfall 04-07-08 08:04 AM

There is no constancy in skids. Too grippy, then no grip. I have been riding them for 3 months though.

hudsong 04-07-08 08:35 AM

My LBS just told me that gatorskins wont last any longer than Vittoria Zaffiros... is this bs?

I_luv_hooters 04-07-08 01:30 PM

vittoria randoneurs are long lasting and skid nicely. heavy but worth it.

peugotpigeon 04-07-08 01:51 PM

i hear they are the best for skidding/skipping...so if thats what ur looking for, id recomend them

i like gatorskins alot. imho they last longer (25c that i used) than my 25c armadillos

hudsong 04-07-08 03:25 PM

Neither of the guys at the shop really ride fixed, and I get the feeling they think it's a ludicrous fad every time I go in there, so it's not the best spot for info.
Thanks!

Mine just started showing small cracks on the sidewall where it meets the rim. No signs of them being skidded through yet though. I will be changing them to gatorskins soon because I don't really like the idea of having cracks on the sidewall, even if cosmetic.

i was riding along one day with my gatorskins and something sliced through my rear gator and tube like a brand new razorblade. i jerry rigged it with a dollar bill and made it to my buddy's house where he had a nice new everwear waiting for me. that was 3 months ago and i have never had a flat (knock on wood). i sometimes skid, but barely ever. so far the tire has been great, and i like the little bit of flair the red stripe adds to my all black bike. if only gatorskins had a similar stripe.

ssspenser 06-06-08 08:05 PM

at 34 skid patches the secas last me about a week and everwears last about 2 maybe 3. im onto armadillos right now and hoping they will last somewhat longer but im yet to find a cheap tire that lasts for a while

Ep3licious 06-06-08 10:54 PM

go rando's

4zn_balla 06-06-08 11:57 PM

gatorskins are the ****

nateintokyo 06-07-08 09:05 AM

I don't skid all that much but I do skips everyonce and again.

But wear wise, my panaracers (which soma rebrands as everwears) started to get cosmetic cracks in the sidewalls after about a month. didn't seem like they would blow, but I run 100-120 psi and I wasn't interested in finding out.

Gatorskins--I have set I rode pretty constantly since last May (07). lost one to a sidewall cut from a nasty drainage cover; the other is still going strong. I liked their ride quality much better too.

mihlbach 06-07-08 01:50 PM

These last for years.

I'm running a Conti UltraSport in the front and a Soma Everwear in the back. I skid quite a bit (I live in Berkeley, and there are some nice, buttery-smooth patches of asphalt that I pass by every day, however rare, and I can't pass up the chance for a nice skid). The Everwear's been doing pretty well, and I've gotten some pretty consistent mid-speed skids. As for wear, they hold up really well (~140 psi) and ride pretty well. However, the rainy season hasn't started yet, so I don't know what traction is like in the wet.
