Chainring
First poster here, so be nice, and yes I already tried the search function.
I'm looking for a new, probably 49t, chainring for my new KiloTT so I'm no longer skidding on the same patch of tire (Kilos come with 48/16 ratio). What do I need to look for with chainring quality and brands? What are some ways to tell a more quality chainring from another? On a tangentially related note: As far as upgrading goes it make more sense to replace a crankset or wheelset first on the Kilos? |
a rocket ring would be fine. very cheap and decent quality.
wheelset is usually first, unless your bottom bracket craps out |
i'd actually not recommend the rocket ring. they are cheap in price, but are likewise cheap in quality. it uses a softer metal, and in the past i've heard of rocket rings failing with some not-so-pretty after pictures. i'd spend a few more bucks on a higher-quality chainring. that said, what's your bcd -- i don't know what stock kilo tt's come with off the top of my head.
|
they come with 130. the only "track" 130 rings are TA whatever and then Stronglight, both of which are substantially more expensive. plus 1/8 so he'd need at least a new chain
edit: i don't know why i was thinking 135, they're 130 |
pretty sure truvativ touro (stock on kilo tt) is 130 bcd...
old shimano road rings are 130. so are a rockets and a billion other chainrings that would be fine for your bike. perhaps you should look into getting a 17t cog though, 49/16 sounds a little steep... |
I would actually like a larger chainring. Around here I have no problems with the hills on my current ratio.
|
^ That's what I was going to say... but then again I ride in a city named after a mountain.

Is there any difference between track and road chainrings that I should be aware of? Is the only constraint of the chain working on my bike is that it must be 130mm and for 1/8 chains? Will need to find a few more chainlinks for my chain if i decide on a 1-tooth-larger chainring?

the mercier comes with 3/32 components stock

Got one a while ago and it seems way less round than my previous chainring. I have to run it with quite a lot of slack. Maybe I just got a bad apple, though. |
Try Harris:
http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/chainrings.html They have little write-ups on each brand. I use the steel Shimano Sora. It works great, and is not much heavier than any of the Al ones. |

my new favorite chainrings are FSA. They're not expensive. I always run a 17T cog for 17 skidpatches.
|
if you are worried about the number of skid patches why dont you just rotate the tire? take your wheel off and remount it so you don't skid on the one spot any more...
