What Light Setup?

I need to pick up a new set of lights.
I got a ticket this week and really shouldnt be all blacked out anyway riding at night.
Curious what people are riding.
I'd like something discreet and LED.

Suggestions?

knogs front and rear. planet bike blinky on the bag. i feel i am seen pretty well from the rear and i fear being hit from the rear more than the front which i could hopefully see coming. it is usually pretty well light were i ride so i pretty much just have the front light on for the legal reasons (if i were to get hit by a car).

You want to see or just be legal? On the rear i'd highly recommend the PB Superflash:

Best and brightest rear light you can get for $15.

The front I don't really have any suggestions that are really bright, anything white that can be flashing should be fine unless you want to see the road - then you're looking at $150+ front lights.

The knogs are the crappiest lights you can get for your bike. Their only advantage is adapting to different places and easy to take on/off. They don't have a lesn/reflector so the leds are much worse than MEC turtle lights seen here:

Not to mention you can almost buy 3 turtles per knog frog.

i dont want something ridiculous, but i definatly dont want to be some SUV's speedbump.
has anyone seen any front mount lights that would mount underneath a stem?
i guess something that has a perpendicular mounting bracket instead of the usual parallel?

I have a couple of planet bike handle bar mount lights that both flash and beam. That with a headlight (cheap from REI) I'm pretty visable.

Cateye TL-LD610 taillight and two Cateye EL500 headlights. The headlights are kinda huge but they pay off for it by being fairly attention grabbing.

Anyone use a Knog Gekko? I've been thinking of grabbing one for my rear. I want something that will clip on and off without having to use a mount (and easily stash in my bag) and these seem like they could be decent.

I second the Turtles over the Knogs. I lost my Turtle so I bought a Knog and it sucked! I had to fiddle with it all the time just to turn it on and it wasn't even that bright.

Right now I have a Viewpoint Flare 5 (I think?) from performance and its really bright. I want to get some more Turtle lights though.

Nashbar sells a copy of them for those of us who aren't in Canada to use MEC. I would advocate buying the turtles at your LBS first, but I know none of mine have them so heres the link:

Planet Bike makes a good 2*AA powered, 5 LED front blinky. It has a great mounting system with a qr and eccentric cam so you can take the whole thing off your bars easily and have a clean look by day. It's available here in the UK under a different brand name, along with the superflash. The uk version is grey not blue, which I like. Beware that it can take on water and short out in heavy rain---some people seal them off with electrical tape.

For the most effective lighting while maintaining ease of removal, a set of Dinotte LEDs would take the cake

From what I can tell, the Gekko cost the same as the Cateye TL-LD610 I use, about $20. The mount it comes with lets you mount the light either horizontal or vertical and the mount itself can be removed in about 10 seconds if you wanted to take it off during the day. The light is pretty slim and the button is flush with the shell of the light so it won't get switched on in your bag.

The problem I have with the Gekko is that it looks like the LEDs are set straight in their housing, but the housing itself is going to sit at the same angle as seat post or whatever you attach it to. Which means your light will be shining down rather than slightly up towards drivers eyes, where it needs to go.

honestly i wouldn't go with something like those frogs if you want to be seen.

https://www.cateye.com/en/product_detail/341

I run one of those and with that mounting system (it pivots on the base) you can put it anywhere. plus you will definitely be seen instead of just maybe hopefully be seen like with single led set ups

The Super Flash is really the only rear light that should be considered if you're looking to spend less than $50. At this point, I imagine that other manufacturers are rushing to try and make something to out-flash Planet Bike, because both of the LBS I frequent sell basically nothing but the Super Flash, at this point.

I run the Cateye HL-EL530 on all of my bikes.

My only complaint is the standard bracket- which i replaced with a sturdier mount - the H-31 or H-32 Depending on Bar Diameter.

I have this and a blackburn Mars 3.0 rear. Verry niiice.

clicky the picy

Edit: Oh yeah, used em both in Seattle thru winter. Survived lots of rainstorms.
Both have lights off to the sides. Mars has 5 rear, 1 to each side. Headlight just has the slit to shine light out sideways.
