I was told to come here to learn/ask about it... Im looking possibly into doing this but dont know where to start... and how to try and find any jobs?

Is there a Jimmy Johns? There seems to be one around every college(UK is in lexington, right?) and I've know i've seen a lot that use bikes for deliveries.

delivering food is your best bet in lexington.

*dumb question* How do I know if they use bikes or cars? (where like some places deliver so far you need a car)

seriously? it doesnt really matter what your choice of transportation is. in a city a bike is gonna be faster anyways...

But the only thing is, like what if they deliver like 5 miles outside the city type deal was all I was worried about.

Not in Cincinnati, except in Clifton by UC's campus. Downtown, too, but Cincy's downtown has just enough business for Mark/Flying Pig, with little need for anyone else with rare exceptions.

Try the Pita Pit. They usually have a few bike delivery employees.

Yeah, i have only seen one Pita Pit that wasn't near a college and it was in Montreal, but since I was just there on vacation with my family i can't be sure if there wasn't a college nearby. The other ones i have seen are here in Athens and then in Bowling Green, OH where my sister goes.

Speaking of places that only exist in college towns, has anyone else had DP Dough? This thread sort of made me think of that and now i'm hungry and cursing myself for not having much money right now.

Hmm, i'm thinking about seeing if any of these places would hire me as a bike delivery dude. i know the town pretty damn well.

lexington could never have bike couriers... the downtown is far too small. cincinnati has flying pig, who barely makes it i think, and city dash had a few but cut them out i think. im not sure about louisville. those are other regional options though. you might also consider lynn imaging, they have several locations and currently drive all their copies and plots around im pretty sure.

here around campus you would probably do well delivering food though, since gas is so pricy, youd make a lot more money than other drivers. try pita pit, the jimmy johns around campus (limestone, waller, and the new one going in downtown), i think the limestone subway might deliver as well. you could also talk to pizza or chinese places, though the orders would be a little tougher, since they usually deliver serveral orders at once (maybe a modified xtracycle?). the nice thing about working for one of the campus locations though would be that 95% of your business would be within a 10 minute ride, even though lexington is planned radially and from downtown you are pretty much limited to a 7 mile ride to new circle, which is nice, but might be problematic given those roads traffic conditions (namely nicholasville and broadway). oh, and stells deli on the northside of downtown is EXTREMELY cool to cyclists, sponsoring alleycats and whatnot. if they deliver, you might try them.

if you do find a job with a restaurant, definitely post it up on lexrides.com. maybe ask about jobs there too, all of us there im sure would request our food delivered by you, and would likely tip you better haha.

true about the flying pig, but i still consider delivering food a messenger job. you can still find work delivering food downtown in cincinnati (theres JJ's and all kinds of other sub places, not to mention chinese, etc).

As do I. I was kinda just responding to your comment that bikes are faster than cars in Cincinnati, which isn't exactly true, except for extremely-localized food delivery and downtown messengering.

yeah, Lexington isn't really urban enough to be faster on bike, with the exception of Nicholasville at 5pm. Otherwise everyone's going 40-50.

I didn't even realize food places used bicycle delivery people. I live in Toronto and am looking for a summer job (possibly courier). What kind of places would hire a bike delivery person? Like a Mr. Sub or something?

well, there's a feasibility that's related to area density - there needs to be enough demand in a compact enough area to make bike delivery sensible.

this is the same reason why there are bike messengers in large cities and not in small towns.

i do food delivery. on a good night we get thirtyfive deliveries in a half-mile radius.

So what kind of restaurant do you work for? Like a fastfood place, or a deli, or something? I just don't know what kind of places I should apply to (I think downtown Toronto has sufficient business to merit a bike delivery service.)
