How would you build a masterpiece bike?

If you were making a bike to put in a time capsule to auction off on Ebay in a few hundred years, what would you put together? What would you make with parts presently available (currently manufactured)? I want something with the classic and simple look of a basic track/racing bike. When I say classic I mean looks similar to the first HT/TT/BT/ST/SS/CS type bikes found in museums...if that makes any sense. Must be FG/SS. Must be a high quality bike worthy of many a pretty penny. Help me out.

quite a concept but it would help us out if you were to present your offering first. Provide the readers some idea where you are headed with this. You say bike and I think more than just fixies. Be a bit more specific or give some examples at the very least. It seems VERY broad.

*edit* oops, didnt read the last sentence too well. still, give us an example.

Bianchi Pista with deep v's and phil woods. At least in 300 years the bike will still be rideable.

Waterford track frame w/ sparkle black frame and chrome lugs, Record cranks/headset/pedals/etc, Zipp 404 track wheelset for velo riding, Zipp hubs laced to DT Swiss RR 1.2 rims for street riding.

A guy had pretty much that bike built locally, cost $6500 or so...

I could also be convinced to use a NOS Superbe track groupo if I could get my hands on a Nagasawa

I'm a little confused about what you're after. First you say you want a new bike built from currently manufactured components to put in a time capsule that would be really appreciated in 100 years time. THEN you say you want classic looks.

I'm pretty sure ANY bike you build today will look "classic" in 100 years. Sloping top tubes, odd shaped aluminum tubes, and unicrowns are actually more representative of these times than round steel tubes and lugs are.

So what are you going for? Something to represent the best that 2008 has to offer in 100 years time, or an "instant classic" that will bring the best of todays technology to a bike with "classic looks".

i'd build a bike i really like to ride, then "lose" the time capsule people's number.

THE RIDDLE!!!

mander 04-10-08 07:26 AM

"Fire and wind come from the sky, from the gods of the sky. But Crom is your god, Crom and he lives in the earth. Once, giants lived in the Earth, Conan. And in the darkness of chaos, they fooled Crom, and they took from him the enigma of steel. Crom was angered. And the Earth shook. Fire and wind struck down these giants, and they threw their bodies into the waters, but in their rage, the gods forgot the secret of steel and left it on the battlefield. We who found it are just men. Not gods. Not giants. Just men. The secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan. You must learn its discipline. For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts.
[Points to tarck bicycle] This you can trust.''

I'd build a full NJS bike. That's pretty close to classic 70's Italian aesthetics with parts that are still manufactured today. Otherwise I'd just build a classic Italian bike if you could do NOS parts.

I'm talking about the frame type obviously. Don't be a fartface.
