p1 six speed conversion
 

well i'm getting a p1 on saturday and i was wanted to see what is envolved in converted the rear sproket into a six speed instead of the single since i use the bike for longer rides the single gear will be hard and i cant afford to buy both :(

You could buy an internally geared hub and have it woven to your existing rim. That'd be the easiest way.

EDIT - well, maybe. What's the spacing on the P1's again?

well the p1 comes with a removable derailleur hanger but anything involving a derailleur is going to need

1. rear cassette/freewheel
2. shifters
3. derailleur

personally i wouldnt get an internal hub as its prolly just cheaper and more efficient to go to your LBS and find a cassette/freewheel that'll pop onto your hub. the p1 has a rear wheel that comes with singlespeed but uses a regular cassette hub + spacers to achieve its SS. so remove the spacers pop on a cassette, screw in the derailleur, hook up your shifters and you're good to go. only problem is - its not cheap unless you got a bunch of spares laying around.

edit: 2005? hm - not to familiar with that one but i know 2006 has spacers and such on the rear wheel w/ a removable derailleur hanger.

i've not got those kinds of spares how much is that rougly going to cost?

i'd def have a LBS do it though.

yeah this is above what i can do i'll take it down to a bike shop and see what they say but now i've got a rough guide of price i'll need to add labour costs but it looks expensive

If you're gonna blow that kind of money on it, why don't you just get a p2 to begin with? That way you have a stock bike with gears and a warranty.

Unless, of course, I'm missing something here.

because that's about 500 pounds stock right there alot more than the conversion

There are cheaper ways...

Snag an decent older mountain bike off craigslist for $30. Something with two flat tires and no handlebars or whatever. Swap everything over.

Watch for the parts on craigslist. You can get nice stuff for cheap if you're willing to wait a month or two.

Go to a bike co-op and dig through the parts bins.
-or-
Go to a few bike shops and barter some beer for the parts you need from the parts bin.
