Roll up dem pants....high.

This has never happened to me since I always roll up my right pant leg. However, for today's day-end joy ride I rolled it up to the point I usually do, then decided to go down one roll (2") because my leg may get a bit cold today.

After 30 blocks of blissful riding, I head home. As I corner to within half a block of my building, my pant leg gets caught and contorts my ankle into a pretty ****ing painful position--sprained. On top of that, my pants are torn up (I only have three presentable pairs); of course, they had to put up enough resistance to sprain my ankle and then tear.

Ouch. So, the ankle is still growing and the pain is getting worse. This ankle has seen two or three severe sprains before, so I don't see myself riding for at least another 2 weeks. No emoticon can express my frustration.

i just wear skinny dude pants, rolled if need be.

dddave 04-10-08 03:36 PM

bexley - what kind of pants were you wearing? i wear 511s, and even though they are pretty snug, they still rub up against my chainring when i have them down and it makes me nervous.

kemmer 04-10-08 03:40 PM

Just roll em or wear knickers. It's just not worth the risk, plus it looks cool. I had a friend who lost the entire leg of his pants once. Yep, the whole leg ripped right off at the ass.

I wear 511's, too. I can't really imagine they'd get caught.. they're pretty skinny. But I don't chance it.. I always roll up the drive-side.

Long underwear or tall, wool ski socks do wonders in cold weather underneath a pair of rolled up jeans. I don't like riding with only one pant leg rolled. It just seems off balance to me.

Flimflam 04-10-08 03:49 PM

Sucks for you, lesson learned I hope - even before I rode fixed, I knew of this danger (thanks to the wonderful Sheldon RIP) and so had it set in my mind never to fudge with that particular risk.

I guess it's more fashionable to roll-up than to put on an anklet or strap? I use 3M hi-vis anklets, for $3 it's a no brainer IMO - cheaper version is just tuck your pants into your sock - is it that hard to figure?

Until shants/shorts season is in full effect, just tuck it in if you're worried about getting cold.

Thanks for the ice reminder. I remembered to elevate and immobilize it right away, but somehow forgot about the ice.

I've been wearing some comfy-as-hell flannel pants for our first week of unfrozen weather. I have just one other pair of pants less than a 5 years old, so this really sucks.

A new pair of pants seriously eats into the budget for my keirin build. Ugh.

I used to buy velcro'd reflector leg straps, but I always lost them and they're really not necessary when it's warm enough to roll up a leg. I moved to rubber bands for a while in the winter, but that's not so reliable either.

Proper rolling technique is key (evenly, with at least 3-4 folds, depending on the pants), as just a short unraveling can lead to disaster. If I had been going any faster...I don't want to imagine.

dddave 04-10-08 04:01 PM

511s at mervyn's for $30!

Yeah rubber bands I wouldn't trust, I've been using the straps 100% throughout pant-season, they've been faultless re: velcro strength. I have something similar to these.

I store them on the bike when I get home, I wrap them both end-to-end together then put them around the stem/frame so they can't fall off unless the velcro fails (which it has never done yet).

Still, sucks about your pants.

bexley 04-10-08 04:15 PM

Yea, I got mine at MEC too. I bought a bunch for when I lived in Chicago but lost all of em within a year.

I will find someone who can sew these pants into <insert name for short pants that you find least annoying>. Still, that's something I'd rather do to my ample supply of old, stained, ugly pants. (I'm still talking about my pants? Really?)

Dumpstergrub@gm 04-10-08 04:15 PM

Your ankle needs RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)

bexley 04-10-08 04:19 PM

Compression? Ok. I wasn't sure about that, but it felt good to wrap a towel around it tightly.

Any limit on the ice? As much as possible until the swelling stops?

when i got my road bike, the first few rides i went out on and a little commuting i did was in jeans, and i rolled pretty high to avoid getting caught. like cuffed almost up to the knee w/ like 2" of cuff below at least. but i have a pretty large calf tattoo on the outside of my leg, added bounus.

rduenas 04-10-08 04:24 PM

I'm too chubby to wear super skinny jeans.

I always roll up both my pants. Hopefully this doesn't happen to me.

Good thing you didn't have to bail out or it could've been worse.

jjh 04-10-08 04:27 PM

you could always turn your torn jeans into some sweet daisy dukes. it is getting close enough to summer that you should be working on your tan anyhow. show off those massive quads you developed by commuting through the snow all winter. turn a lemon into lemon aide!!!

as for your ankle, i always found that a soon as i stopped moving it would get all screwed up. the more you sprain it the easier it is to recover. both of mine are kind of wreaked from playing basketball, but now when i do it i am out of commission for a day or two. enjoy the bruise as it works its way up your leg. please post pics.

yeah, i was gonna say, i'm a fat kid, so the skinny jeans ain't happening. Though, i had been loosing a lot of weight from going to the gym and riding, that stopped fast when i broke my collar bone on easter. even if i lost a bit more weight, i think my frame is too wide to look normal in skinny jeans, though, i'm gonna check some of them out next time i go pant shopping. i have a nice ass.
