Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? My bike gets its character from its history. The bike is a 1972 Gitane originally ridden by my father in college. It then sat in a garage for 30 years. I was digging around years after he had died and found this bike and a 1972 Masi. The Masi was restored to mint condition and this bike became my tried and true commuter. I've tried to keep as many of the parts from the original as possible. The fork was destroyed in a crash but the 531 frame, 3ttt record stem, 3ttt bars (chopped and flopped), brake calipers/lever, Sugino crankset and drillium chainring are still going strong after 36 years and thousands of miles.

Other bits of character are the paintjob: bare frame with clearcoat (and currently covered in doodles from Alleycat attendees) and the new rear wheel I built: a Sachs Duomatic 2-speed kickback coaster brake hub laced to a 36h Mavic OP. Oh, and my handlebar tilt is unorthodox.

Relax.

Don't take the joke like a vag--"from scratch" just sounds funny for assembling three parts that are made for each other. "I built these wheels" is fine.

edit: Four, not three! Forgot about the nipples, which I guess you forged from the metal in old stereos.

i didnt have nipples so i just bought extra long spokes, poked em into the rim holes, and stuck a skittle on the end of each one. its held together so far...

Haha, something like that. I just set the bars so that they're at the same angle as the drops on standard road handlebars. I've tried out different angles and this one works well for me. Less hand numbness after riding on rough roads during the 40 mile rt commute.

The cream fenders and mini-backpack converted into saddlebag gives my bike it's character.

I am pretty fond of this bike too... as a cruiser it is incredibly smooth and fast and I can't wait to get the fixed wheels on it and go for a spin.

A few more shots...

My fixed wheelset... taken prior to the new wrap and brake.
