Alleycats are fun. Just go out to get what you want out of it, and don't worry about what other people are doing. Chances are you'll run into a few d1cks, but you'll also meet plenty of nice people. Be careful, since you'll be riding in/with car traffic.
Don't worry about coming in last. There's a certain ironic glory in placing DFL, and hey: at least you finished. Plenty of other people won't. DFL is better than DNF! There will probably be an afterparty, which is almost the whole point IMO. Meet a bunch of people, ride your ass off, do ridiculous, funny, and sometimes degrading things at the checkpoints, and then get tanked with a bunch of people who all just went through the same experience. Doesn't really get any better. |

Its pretty much hilarious I have to defend a position that I didnt do something illegal to try placing better in a race I entered to have a good time.
When I said couldnt go anywhere, it was not that traffic was totally stopped, it was just slow in the direction I was going. We were both in the left lane, and its illegal to take a left there (and taking a right was the wrong direction and full of stop signs). Had I split the center he may have been able to get in opposing traffic lane and caught up with me. Also the cop just got back in the lane after pulling someone over, I figured he was in a ticket writing mood. All and all it in the moment I decided it wasnt worth the risk. And I dont have a ticket right now, so Im happy. It must be a lot easier sitting back and calling me on a decisions from behind a keyboard. ;) sorry your ***** hurts, though. |
Maybe getting f*cked was a strong choice of words. Something like 'traffic was being inopportune' would have been done the job. Lets not turn this thread into a pissing fest.
My original point to 'whining' about my last race was that traffic can be unpredictable and sometimes its better to play it safe than get a nice fat ticket. |
alleycats are fun. even if you ride slow as **** and drink the entire time, you'll have a blast. if you're in austin make sure to check out the deathfest race.

That was my first alleycat I thought it was a lot of fun. I only had to stop for traffic once or twice the rest was free ballin, lots of honking angry drivers, but honestly that was probably one of the more enjoyable parts. |
Yeah drivers will get real angry when there's a big group of riders in an alleycat basically going against all traffic rules in an organized group :D Portland traffic gets pretty ****ed around 5pm weekdays if you've been out on your bike downtown around then, mainly W. Burnside. Not totally stopped but moving slooooowly. I'm not a fan of riding at that hour because drivers are tired and eager to get home, and make a lot more sketchy decisions and risky moves IME.

likeahorse, yeah I was referring to mash 2 mash (I was on the black jamis sputnik). The race was a good time. Hold ups were a bit frustrating, guess it just wasnt my day. Lots of cops that day for some reason…but hey at least I didnt get 3 tickets like alex (ouch!). And that is pretty accurate description of the traffic here.
