I'm a few rides into a set of Sidi road shoes and eggbeaters and had my first battle with a hill that I have had to push my bike up with clips/straps and I must say it was much better clipless.

I can't really imagine a skid pulling you out of the pedals especially with how much I was pulling on those pedals to get me up that hill!

I still want to trade my GR9s for some MKS sylvan track or streams (for ease of riding on the not clipped side) for when I put my risers on and dick around, pedals are easy to change so who says you have to be exclusive?

The timing was fantastic, it happened tonight.

I guess my original question was phrased badly, because i did mean from natural twisting that happens during skids/skips.

Ground was wet and I was ****ing around before I went back inside after a short ride, swinging the rear wheel around a bit, just playing around since the ground was slick, and my foot popped out. Thankfully was going quite slow so I didn't fall or anything. so, yeah, i'll have to be careful not to twist too much.


Oh yeah, then about 20 seconds later I ride past where my car should be and it's gone.

Moral of the story, clipless pedals get your car stolen.

I rode geared bikes with clips and straps for too many years, and clipless has spoiled me for all time.

Interestingly, my older son prefers clips and straps on his geared bike.

I have long-term knee issues and a professional bike fitter and my physical therapist insisted on zero float spd's, and it worked beautifully.
If ride with conventional floating cleats now, my knee aches within minutes.
The zero float cleats keep my ankle, knee and hip in the alignment/relationship my bike fitter intended.

I saw a fellow the other day riding a fixed gear bike with platform pedals.
He did a very elegant and effortless track stand in traffic.
Someday I'd like to build a fixed gear bike with platform pedals in mind, but I know my knees wouldn't tolerate it.

I too considered the problem of coming unclipped. It seems like coming unclipped while riding fixed would be worse than on a geared/freewheel bike.

As some have written, probably not a big deal, especially will how much you pull on pedals climbing hills. But, like so-so experienced, if you are skidding and stuff and moving your feet around a lot, unclipping could be an issue. I think if you are just riding though, clipping isn't much of an issue.

Yep, Ken, I'm spoiled as well. I'm trying to take the clipless off my fixed gear and put them back on my road bike, but I don't want to...it was too nice. I told myself I'd upgrade in the fall...but I'm already checking out new pedals this morning...

And if you are going to be doing a lot of skidding/tail whips, etc. and are concerned with unclipping, you could always get a pedal/cleat with a lot of float, like the Keos in 9 degree.

I second that about Lance...I just cannot believe how some pro riders climb...they ride up moutains at speeds that would be impressive on flats. I have to see that in person one of these days soon! Watching Marco Pantani climb was/is amazing as well. A little, skinny bald guy who just flies up mountains...

Hey, I totally avoided that issue. True, true...but I was just saying that he was impressive to watch, whether he was chemically assisted or not.

And yes, it is a hell of a drug. Never combined it with biking though.

in over a a year of riding exclusively clipless (time atac and alium), i've come unclipped exactly twice.

the first, i was doing a hockey stop, and i twisted my foot as i was twisting my body. duh. the second, the cleats were very worn.

moral of the story? it probably won't happen to you.

i skid a lot. i usually fishtail side to side. i have never ever come out on accident with my TIME ATACs.

clipless also makes it really easy for me to pedal backwards while skidding so i'm not just skidding on the same part of the tire the whole time (my gear ratio already gives me 17 skidpatches).

EDIT: i also rock a brake just in case something does happen. i have clipped out twice before, but that was with SPDs, and they were very worn.

oceanfx - i ride time atacs and i skid. not a lot - i mostly rely on resistance and skipping, but i'll prolong a skid when i need to. under intense city riding, thirty miles a day. i've unclipped once from skidding, and that was definitely due to twisting my foot while hockeystopping. and, for the record, i was drunk. hammered.

seriously. clipless pedals stand up to fixed riding. no question about it.

Can your cleat fit a 3 hole pattern (or unless you happen to have the same shoe size)? If so we should swap next time you are up in PDX. Im riding Keos and have been wanting to try out Time Atacs for a short to spin for fun.

For the skid purpose, I wish I could put a leather strap over clipless. Giving me double power.

The pedals have an adjustable tension screw. If you clip out too easily, tighten it up a bit until it's just right. You can overtighten so be careful. I once fell over on my mtb. and couldn't get my feet unclipped. I lay there like a flipped over turtle until some guy rode up, finally stopped laughing, and helped me out.
