Keeping head warm while wearing helmet?

I know this is a general question, but I am posting it here because this is the only forum I look at. So if it's 20 degrees out, what do you do? If I was walking around I might wear a warm hat or something, but I don't think that will fit under the helmet. (??)

P.S. Sorry for posting multiple helmet related questions but I am bored and don't really have anything to say about fixed gear riding or bikes right now.

Pearl Izumi, REI and I am sure a few others make "skull caps" which are thin polar fleece caps that fit snug on your noggin and do a good job keepin you warm.

I wear mine sometimes even when not biking it is so warm.

balaclava

I use the wrap around the ears. My ears and forehead get the coldest. The open top lets the heat escape through the helmet.

There are very thin and warm ear wamers made. You have to have one of these in Michigan!

Depending on your helmet, you can sometimes remove some of the internal fitting pads. This will give you more room for your hat.

Somebody in the Winter Biking forum was talking about wearing socks on their ears recently. I'm thinking about getting a cheap headband from the drugstore down the street.

balaclava for deffo, also consider a helmet with minimal ventilation for the winter, or alternatively using gaffa tape to cover the vents up.

Hi,
Burley makes nice helmet covers. You could combine that with ear muffs. Or...you could get some sort of a balaclava. I have to take all the helmet padding out to make that option work.

Like Capt Sven -- headband/ear wrap. A full cap sometimes gets me too warm.

doo rag. It's just enough to keep the wind off the ears.

i just pull the hood from my swaetshirt up under the helmet...

when i'd ride in boston, i'd just layer an old postal coat over my trusty sweatshirt and cover my face with a scarf...oh yeah, gloves too...and two pairs of pants on some days.

Performance and several other stores sell 'wicking' balaclavas. They are great and don't hold your sweat, which makes one cold.
