building a deep v
couldn't find what i needed on search.
building up a deep wheel, do i need 16mm nipples? also, if i do, should i go with slightly shorter spokes? not sure if this is even a logical question. |
regular nipples are fine.

Yeah. the only 'special' thing you need to do with deep section rims is carefully place the nipple in the hole, since you can't drop it directly (I can't, anyway). I thread the nipple onto a spoke on the slotted side, place it through the hole, unscrew it, place the screwdriver in the slot, and then thread the spoke. Doesn't take long once you get the hang of it, and it's less annoying that chasing errant nipples.

+1 I built a set up last week and bent an old spoke in the shape of a t-handle to start the nipples on the spokes. Works nicely and doesn't take *that* much more time than building an LP wheel. |
A note for the Velocity deep-V. The "Velo Plugs" (little plastic snap-in nipple hole covers) are lighter
than tape, and they work great. http://www.velocityusa.com/img/acces...-plugs_red.jpg |
The wheels I built were 280mm drive side and 281 mm non drive side with 12mm nipples. If you use longer nipples would the spoke length change at all? I would assume that the extra length is not threads but just extra space for the nipple wrench.

awwww i'm a n00b :( because I use veloplugs, too (and love them). its not like "inserting" 32 plugs is difficult or time consuming and at least they don't move over time and cause flats.
I also used 16mm nipples on my last build just because I wanted a slightly bigger nipple for contast of the silver against my all black spokes and rims. it ended up looking nice. but 14mm would've been fine. |
Do you guys really have problems with tape moving over time and causing flats? I'm a volunteer at a bike co-op and in a 3-5 hour shift usually help about 4 or 5 people change flats. I've seen a lot of flat-inducing problems, but have never encountered that. Is it caused by incorrectly installed rim tape?
