abus lock or kryptonite ny lock?
 

Moved to ny and need to get a new lock, looking for a new lock, tried searching for abus reviews couldn't find too much, anybody know anything about the abus city chain? Its more expensive and lighter than the ny chain.

Get both.

paying NY rents I'd imagine "..." doesn't want to be out several hundred dollars more than necessary... why get both?

How heavy is it? The short Kryptonite NY Noose is only 5 pounds.

I have a NYL SL U lock and its money.

If you decide to look into U locks... the reg size or the mini's are prolly better. But unflippingfortunately here at school, the mini's won't work with the bike racks and my *cough* conversion *cough*

But the locking mechanism is nice. It worked AOK in the -40f temp range.

I have an Evo mini and will continue to use it, I can't get away with not locking my wheels up anymore. The abus lock I saw was the abus city chain 1060 (might be an older model, no weight info online)it was about half the weight of the 3ft ny chain and lock, which is listed at 9.2lbs. Abus also has the granit city chain x-plus 1060 which is 8lbs.

I've got a kryptonite "fuggedaboudit" or whatever the shackle's called, with a NY Disc lock... but then, I don't live in NYC.

The short Kryptonite noose is not really any more useful than a regular-sized u-lock, it is pretty short. The Abus is overpriced in the US, just get the Kryptonite chain. If you need more protection than that, it isn't safe to leave the bike outside period.

OR, you could stick with the lock you have and get Pitlock skewers for the wheels.

Thanks for the info. I have phils so I think pitlocks are out. The abus is only about 25 more and might be worth that for the integrated lock it has ,if they are about equal (thinking about messengering again)

The Abus integrated lock is the same mechanism they use in their U-locks, so it is probably better than a padlock. The padlock might be more flexible, however, if you have more than one chain.

Abus also makes a few noose locks which are highly regarded, check out lockitt.com

I've been using the Abus city lock in the city for 3 years now and It's been good to me. Fits through both wheels and frame and around a 3" post. (depending on wheelbase) and it fits the waistline well (depending on waistline)
It is A LOT lighter than the kryptonite too.

if it's anything like my Kryptonite you could also wear it bandolier style...

NYC chain or 2 mini krypto evos. Or one evo if you're feeling lucky, i.e. not in manhattan.

your bike is still not safe. if you can see it, watch it. never leave it outside at night, ever.

when I lock up at school I use the nyc chain and a mini for good measure, cause it's an hour and a half class.


no matter what you are using, a thief can get through it with a 50$ battery powered hand tool.

you'll get used to the chain.

Phils and bikelocked up formorethan 20 mins at a time = your hub gets cut out.

i use the kryptonite and love it, i recommend it

this is all very depressing and helpful. I think I'm going to go with the abus city chain, if they're getting through that then there also getting through a ny chain, so might have the lock be lighter and a little more user friendly, and i think i will start building a i'm not so attached to. thanks again

You will be carrying the lock around your waist, right?

Better make sure that the Abus fits, or you have to carry that sucker in your bag, which really sucks.

A krypto chain is nice because you can adjust it to the size of your waist.

Also, if you lock the abus around your waist and then you get hit, paramedics can't get the ****er off.

They can get an unlocked kryp chain off.

just sayin'.

also, don't let it scare you. One of my bikes has phils. the other is dura ace. no one cares. your hubs are fine.

you can't swing a cat in new york without hitting a set of phil's.

How many mm are the links on each chain? This will give you an idea of how big a hand tool will be needed to cut it. For instance 8mm links can be cut rather easily with bolt cutters, larger links are much more difficult to cut, although I have seen some cheap croppers at the local hardware store that claim to cut metal up to 10mm in diameter.

A pair of 42" bolt cutters can cut a Kryptonite chain, there is a video or two on Youtube of a guy cutting a bunch of heavy chains made for motorcycle security. He's obviously having a hard time of it, but he pulls it off.

He was able to do it because he got the chain low enough that he could brace one handle of the bolt cutters on the ground, and then push down on the other handle with his full weight. If you lock properly, you will wrap excess chain around the bike or post and not leave much slack.

Those folks have been discredited as far as using real life methods that thieves use. Their sole purpose was to spread fear and panic to sell their own chains.

Yeah, but their method did work, and in NYC of all places those kind of tools aren't out of the question.

Thier method envolved the chain laing on the ground, which is the case in a motorcycle lockup.

A bike lockup leaves the chain suspended in between 2 wheels off the ground.

The key to thier clipping method was ground leverage.

Don't leave your chain on the ground.
