I think you'd be more productive teaching working families how to plant victory gardens or provide inexpensive bicycles to the public like workingbikes does in chicago than handing out burritos to random street junkies that really dont give a **** about anything besides scoring dope. but cheers to you. I guess simple acts of kindness and generosity have their place, but if you were to really organize and spend a deal of effort into a project, might as well do something that will get have a lasting impact rather than just "feeding pigeons" (and having them grown dependent upon your hand-outs).

I"m a human first and politics come later, I'm pretty sure the poor and sick don't care what political background you are from if you show them some love, however that may be. Heck half the time having a 5 minute conversation with someone has a bigger impact than giving them some scrilla. If we set our differences aside and look at people as human beings not a problem/addiction/homeless/color/religion/or political belief I think that we will start seing how blessed we are and how much need there is right on your front step. Man I'm usually not in the mood to argue and preach at people but I guess this is a bit bigger than whether or not someone should go with Phils or Formulas.

It does sound a lot like Food Not Bombs, which is incredibly successful in several cities. We used to run the Phoenix, AZ one out of my kitchen. That was pretty intense.
I volunteer at the Tempe, AZ bike co-op and am a regular member. We also help to promote bicycle awareness and education programs, stuff like that.
I also drafted a bill and gave it to my local representative to try to pass it. We had a long talk and discussed it pretty deeply, and he thinks it's a great idea. It redefines manslaughter and negligent homicide to automatically include vehicle-bicycle accidents, as well as raises the classification from the default, which is currently a moving violation in Arizona. Yes, right now if you get hit by a car and die, the driver doesn't have to pay more than $1000 if he or she was sober.

that sounds like a cool project.
i helped organize a bike coop that got more people fixing junkers, riding them, using them, loving them - and teaching them skills. and teaching them how to teach skills. we also worked with local kids in the housing projects, fixing their bikes, hanging out, trying to do a little bit to lessen the effed-up distance that the university tried to build between us and them.
we also had a Food Not Bombs collective. We'd feed 50+ people each Sunday, in front of a soup kitchen that was closed on Sundays, from free/collected/donated/leftover food.

Rice n' beans my friend. Keep it simple, If we get some more funds we'd probably do some peppers and onions too but for now beans n' rice is a great start. And yes they will stay meat free for many reasons. Good call though!

We make burritos about 50-100 and then load up our bags and as many of our friends as we can and head out into the town and pass them out to the homeless in our community.t. We are hoping to eventually make this a weekly event and really make a change in our community. .
If you cook them, they will come.

I really admire the effort that something like that takes, and it makes me wish I had more time to volunteer. I'll have to look into that this summer.
I'm curious: where do you get such large quantities of food? Do you have access to an industrial kitchen or something that you're using to mass produce the burritos?
FWIW, I think this is one of the most interesting threads I've seen in a while.

btw, don't think people are heartless or selfish just because they dont want to give out burritos. A lot of us arent naive about poverty, alcoholism, homelessness. Its a hard life working for a living. Its easier to stand there all day with your hand out.

This is a fantastic idea! I'm thinking of starting one in my local city, but my only concern is organization. How would I make it possible for those interested to get in touch with me, I'm only a college student with an already expensive cell phone bill. I could see cooking the burritos in my kitchen, and might even know a couple souls goodhearted enough to help out!

i speak from a lot of experience. believe that. its much harder to provide and support your family (especially kids). yes, its easier to lounge in alcoholism and drug abuse, never facing personal responsibility. its harder to do the right thing.

Also, a side note to those talking about homeless people just not trying, and simply living off donations.
Burritos are a perfect way of countering this. Don't give them money they can squander, but food to feed their bellies. I've had friends hit hard times before, and sometimes something so simple can really give them hope or at least relieve the stress of being a transient.
You'd be hard pressed trading a burrito for heroin or meth

forget the lives of the homeless, consider the life of someone who's about to be homeless. I guarantee most panhandlers are not former college students who just couldn't hack the last week of classes. Anyway, I don't like issues. Issues make people angry.

good point. I always get angry when issues like this come up around me. Thats because i once felt and thought the way the Op does. Then I had life experiences that have forced me to realize the real causes and forces behind homelessness and addiction. I like to help people still. I just get frustrated by people doing it the wrong way.

haha, I was just quoting sTePs, from kids in the hall. I know what you mean, though, about the frustration. Like putting a bandaid over a giant fleshwound. The bandaid gets absorbed, just grows into the wound. (OT)
