How about installing a tiny chainring and backpedal(jump)ing?
I'd go PB Blaster, let it soak in, and then use the chain whip we rigged up with a BMX grind chain. With a like, 6 foot cheater bar. Anything more than that and it's time to think of more macho solutions. Like craigslist. |
for the sake of this thread, do not quit until you get it off.
try this: beefy chain, old chainring, rubber mallot. put the drivetrain together. bang the crankarm (with the mallot) in the reverse direction until it's off. you'll want it on the floor for this one; your buddy holds the bike (brakes engaged if you have them), you wack the crankarm with the mallot. not sure what this method will do to the bb/cranks, but at least the cog won't win. ed: even better, get a foot and a half of cheater bar around the crankarm before hitting it. make sure it's a heavy pipe. that'll learn it. |

the mallot might be abrupt enough to do it?
idunno. are you video documenting this? because you should be. |
Wish I had a video camera, only an SLR camera with no video :( . You would think jumping on it would have more of an effect (affect?).
|
i wouldn't, but i'm also not a physicist.
the only reason i believe that is i've taken stuff off with a mallot that no ammount of anything has been able to remove. You can slam something pretty hard fifteen times with a mallot, wheras i'm willing to bet you're not jumping on something fifteen times with as consistent a level of force. |
Dude... it'll come off. You just gotta do it.
When I first built my fix. I didn't put any anti-seize on the threads for my cog. I just went to the bike shop (most of my buddies/teammates work there) and rode it around the shop stomp skidding everywhere. Like 40 mins later... I busted my kids on the top tube when the sucker broke loose. Everyone is standing around laughing hysterically at me trying to celebrate and not throwup at the same time. Delicious experience. It will make you a man. Get it off. On a side note... Im sure I simply missed it, but what kind of wheel is it? Edit: The blocks of wood into a vice while you turn the wheel is a good method too. Alternate between riding and vicing. |

He may not be that strong, but between the two of us it should have been easy. If I need a bodybuilder to get this cog off then screw it, it's going up on craiglist.
good luck with this. I think penetrating oil is key here. |

You would have to be careful with the dry ice, or liquid nitrogen for that matter, as the intense cold could be detrimental to the integrity of the metal. I've only dealt with heat-treating, not cryo-treating steel, so I can't be 100% on that one.
Also, you can get ice pretty cold. To get a pretty cold ice bath, i forget the exact temperature, mix some ice and ethanol, should get a fairly cold temperature. I guess you could maybe switch out ethanol for denatured alcohol, which if I remember correctly is just methylated ethanol (so you can't drink it...), or maybe even isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). Or you could always go the saltwater and ice route. If you want cryo-cold on the cheap and easy, go with a bath of dry ice plus ethanol or acetone. That will get you down to about -80°C. Any lower and you're starting to look at liquefied gases. |
try turning it in the opposite direction
|
Well I finally got it off. Soaked it in WD40 and let it sit overnight then put it in the vice again and after breaking a few teeth on the cog it finally came off. I greased the threads this time.

everyone loves a happy ending!
