Which front disc hub?
So, I've started working off the fixie-with-a-disc-brake project I've been talking about for months now. I was talking hubs with the other mechanics, and I'm split right now between going cartridge or cup-and-cone.
It looks like its between Surly Disc, Formula Disc, overkill Chris King/DT Swiss (just kidding), or a plain and simple cup-and-cone Deore XT. Cartridge would be better sealed, but may effectively disable me if bearings break down and I don't have replacements on hand (this bike will be my car next year). Cup and cone offers worse sealing, but I have no fear of getting my hands dirty and rebuilding every so often. It's not like I don't do that already at work. Discuss. |
I wouldn't worry about the hub seals on shimano's not working well; they are among the best-sealed hubs out there. Their front hubs are bullet-proof.
That said, if you can get a formula, I'd go for it. Their mountain stuff is usually dismissed as junk, but that's just because their freehubs have mediocre engagement (a la non-XTR shimano). Front hubs are stupid simple. |
