Rather than buying . . .

A true fixed gear wheel, would it be more ecomincal to buy a shimano freehub wheel, and use the surly fixxer to convert it to fixed gear?

Also, would it be more versatile?

And, has anyone used the Surly Fixxer?

i don't really think so in the long run. it depends on what two wheels you're comparing also. if you happen to have a shimano freehub wheel lying around, then yeah, go for itbut i don't think you'll see much of a price difference if you're looking to buy a whle new wheel...

Unless you have a complete wheel(with freehub) then I don't believe you will have much of a savings.
Suzue hub about $30, butted spokes, brass nipples $24, Mavic MA3 $30. If you have it built, another $35 to $40. Tie and solder another $15. I think the converter is about $80-90 and you would need to dissasmble the hub to install it.

i used a fixxer on my deore disk wheel that is on my 1x1. it made sense for me since i already had the wheel. it worked great.
