Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

In theory I like fixed gears

but i'm starting to get turned off by the whole scene. the more i watch fools sketching out all over just trying to "skid" to a stop at a red light or just riding so wack in general it kills me.
i have tons of respect for truly skilled riders who know what they're doing, but they're so few and far between it's ugly. ugly bikes, ugly riding, lame completely impractical everything.
kids, your scene is becoming a joke, a parody of it's roots.
so go ahead and torch away, but the taste in mouth has turned pretty bitter.

I feel the exact same way about Julia Childs. At first I'm like yeah, this chick made people in the U.S. realize that there was such a thing as good food and that they could make it themselves. And then I'm like, but the prices at whole foods suck ass and that's pretty much a direct result of the **** she was pulling, plus I think Jacques Pepin is an son of a ***** and whoever puts him on my teevee can suck it.

So, yeah, I feel you brah.

So go hang out with seasoned messengers then, or guys that have been apart of the scene for longer than a year. I don't like kids that picked up fixed gears last month, can't throw a proper (seated or close to it) skid to save their life, and have pink Deep V's on a $5 throwaway garage sale frame either, but I don't feel any need to post internet threads about it.

+1 on huerro's foodie allusions...

Don't worry. Nobody hates fixed gear riders more than other fixed gear riders.

The key to being a hipster is hating other hipsters. Therefore it is only natural that fixed gear riders hate other fix gear riders.

In all honesty I get it. I am a young guy in SF, and I catch that crap a lot. But I think its pretty easy to tell who is in it for fashion and who is in it for the joy of cycling.

And who doesn't like to skid, that crap is fun.

you wanna hate?
work a wet, wet winter, and then leave your outdoor job right as it starts getting warm and lovely and all the NYU kids start walking their fixies around washington park and union square.

so hard not to hate.

but i try to rein it in.

cause what's the point?

do what you do and be satisfied by that.

The best is when you see 2 people walking their bikes together, and they are complimenting each other on how pretty their bikes are.

Yeah. I like wearing shoes. But I hate it when other people wear shoes and act like idiots. It's like, come on, don't ruin it for me, I'm wearing shoes too ya know?

**** it. I'm going to buy some flip flops.
