Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Fixed in Wilmington NC

I'm curious if anyone on here is in the Wilmington NC area. Back in March I got my first fixed gear
(rode mostly ss mtb before that, and i'm lovin the fixed gear). Up till now I had only seen two, maybe three fixed gear bikes in Wilmington in the past few years. Then lastnight a friend calls me (the only person I know with a tall bike) and said he was downtown and there was a bunch of guys on fixed gears and some people were tallbike jousting. Then this morning driving to work I see three guys riding fixed. So, where are you guys at?
Unfortunatly last Saturday(few hours before my wedding) I broke wy foot so it will be a few weeks before I'm back on the bike, but it's alway cool to see and meet some people riding fixed...

I was based out of Lumberton, NC for about a year and a half. Im not there currently... but I might be back that way at some point.

Wilmington is mad nice. I wouldn't dare ride my bikes around Lumberton though.

Any reason for that, or is it just not your cup of tea? It's not the coolest plase in the world, especialy if you're from a big city, but it's a pretty cool place. Got the beach, small downtown, college, decent bike shops, short winters......???

Flamin amy's does kickass. And also Charlie brown's has new owners (cheeto and his bro) and is way cooler now...

I must admit I do have a beach cruiser for late night chill rides to the beach. But, in my defense I took a busted trashed 24" jamis cruiser and choped it up, stretched it, raked it out, flat backed it, and made it fit 26's. It's not a bling'ed out lowrider though.

I lived in wilmington and worked "downtown" on front street. Its a hyped up over priced town with way to many vinyl sided condos.

The music scene there sucks too. The only band worth seeing from there was maybe Thunderlip like 3 years ago.

Flaming amys does rock...and the dixie grill.

Hey, to each his own

Music scene does suck for the most part. But, Fuzz Jax is good if you like hip-hop. especialy if you like mid-late nineties stuff...
There is a lot of city planning going on right now, which should bring some cool touches around here. New convention center, city-wide bike trail system, revamped downtown housing....

But like I said.. to each his own. I'm not trying to get people to move here, just seeing if anyone ride fixed here..

I heard some local fixie guys are starting a repair co-op in downtown Wilmington, and that there are more and more SS/FG bikes. Look for Silas, a big, tall guy who knows what's happening there. He's cool.

It was different being born and raised there. I don't really like going back so much. Although, nothing's like hitting some September swells "over there" and in Topsail.
