if you're skidding ALL the time you're doing it wrong. skips should be utilized more than skids, but even then leg modulation should rule dominant as a way of slowing down

Proper skids = seated skids. Unless you're going for distance.

And yeah, what gyeswho said too. Learn to ride smooth above all else, no matter the speed. It's partly a mental thing, knowing when to throw which manuever. Even bombing hills in traffic, skips are better to modulate speed unless you have to stop before a light or something.
