sorry, noob here, $135 for this wheelset good?

found this on my local cl. he's asking $135 for the set. he didn't mention what kind of hubs though.

what kind of hubs should i be looking for to make this a decent buy? thanks in advance for any responses.

TurntheScrew 05-09-08 03:17 AM

coincidentally for that very ammount of money i would just suggest the formulas laced to cxp22s from bww.

thanks for the suggestion. is it the hubs that make that set better?

Daijoubu 05-09-08 09:40 AM

Mavic rims are much better than those Vuelta's
They're lighter, eyeletted and fabriqué en france

artblur@artblur 05-09-08 09:50 AM

vueltas :(

thequickfix 05-09-08 10:59 AM

For the record, cxp22 rims do not have eyelets. The formula/mavic wheelset is still the better choice, though (I have two).
Regardless of what wheels you end up getting, I would recommend getting them tensioned and trued for optimum durability. All the wheels you will find in that range are machine built, and they might not be ready to ride right out of the box.

Yes they do, I have seen them myself (a set from wheel and sprocket). Unless older version didn't
http://www.mavic.com/road/products/CXP-22.995216.aspx

Edit: Or the eyelets are optional, the description is weird

6106 aluminum alloy
Aerodynamic profile
Clincher
External wear indicator
Non eyeletted
Pinned
Single eyelet
Traditional drilling

I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT THESE MAY NOT BE THE SEXIEST AND PROBABALY AREN'T THE BEST QUALITY COMPARED TO THE OTHER OPTIONS BUT THEY INCLUDE TUBES AND TIRES AND A 16T COG.

it would be great to hear your guys' opinions on these options now that you know what i'm looking for and the budget i'm working with. thanks again in advance for any replies.

DataJunkie 05-09-08 01:06 PM

How about IRO wheelsets? A bit more than the above options but I hear the quality is up there.
Just a thought.

Well that is strange. All I know is that the set that I got from bicyclewheels.com 1.5 years ago does not have eyelets.

I want to live in a place with cheap wheels/ bike parts.

I want to live in a place with cheap wheels/ bike parts.
Just use the parts from a walmart bike.

diff_lock2 05-09-08 03:49 PM

No walmart either.

na975 05-09-08 03:55 PM

cpx22's were made with/without eyelets. all my cpx22's have eyelets.

TurntheScrew 05-09-08 04:36 PM

mine have eyelets.

as for the wheels, i still recommend the cxp22/formula set. out of the sets you listed, if you don't want something a little flashier like the weinmanns, they are the best value. yes i know that the vuelta xrps come with tires and tubes but if you buy all cheap stuff from performance you can get two tires and two tubes for $25. all in all that extra 40 to 45 dollars isn't going to matter. where i live thats 5 or 6 hours of minimum wage in exchange for at least a few hundred more miles and the comfort of being able to drop curbs and ride with confidence.

buzzybelmondo 05-10-08 09:52 AM

i have a set of the cxp22/formula's from bicyclewheels.com on my commuter
6000+ miles, 2 wisconsin winters under my 91kg @ss , still true and smoov

The Weinmann are quite heavier though, the rim alone is along the line of 700G compared to 500ish for semi-aero/boxed rims like the CPX22

thanks for all the responses. mavic/formula ftw!

jacobpriest 05-10-08 02:20 PM

the vualtlas or what ever are the same thing as quando. yes they come with a ****ty cog and ****ty tires but honestly, your best deal is going to be from bicycle wheel warehouse. a friend has thouse, and they are just fine

TurntheScrew 05-11-08 03:58 AM

let us know what you decide (let us know if you join the cxp22 fan club).

birdt8608 12-03-08 10:27 PM

I'm looking at getting a set of cpx22/formulas for a conversion that I'm going to be working on, but the info given on the BWW site says that the biggest tires they'll take are 700x25. Why is this? I was hoping to put on some 28s for the winter riding. Nice that they throw in a cog and lock ring though.
