Chub Hubs
Has anybody posted about this yet?
I saw a link to the Chub Hub website on the Suzue Basic Hub thread and I decided to check it out. Well, I don't know what to think about this thing, although I've seen them before on some picture galleries. Pretty wierd, but it does look rather intriguing. There's probably alot of empty space in that hub which could easily fit drum brake shoes and related hardware. $190 for the hub? I don't know, is it worth it? Does this hub solve any drivetrain problems or is it just another chi-chi component that looks cool? |
I have a chub hub on my surly and i love it.
http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...achmentid=8386 I agree 190 is way steep for a hub. It is Chris kind quality though so there is something to be said for that. Joe is a very honest nice guy. I have worked in bike shops for awhile now and Joe has the best customer service of any company i have ever dealt with. The 100mm flange lets you run a super short spoke and it gives a stiff responsive wheel. It made a noticeable difference for me. I wore my bearing out because i ran my chain too tight and Joe sent me new bearings and a t-shirt for free! It was really nice of him considering it was 100% my fault that the bearing developed play. The hubs are super easy to work on. I did notice you have to take the cog and lockring off to press the bearings in. if you like the look of the chub and you have the cash to get one i say go for it. I would recommend this hub to anyone. |
I still cannot get over how gravy that steamroller looks in pink. Who did the powdercoat?
|
thanks man.a small place here in colorado springs did the powdercoat. if you want a nice powder coat check out www.spectrumpowderworks.com they do the best powder coating on bicycle frames. its steep but by far the best
|
Yeah, that's who I thought as far as Co Sprngs goes. They were gonna repaint my old 1x1 I had out there, but didn't have the dough.
You been riding the Velo at all? If not, you should really check out the races (Thurs/Fri if I remember correctly). A few guys from the shop used to race there...afterwards, it was beers and pizza. Always a good time. |

Sheldon Brown doesn't think so. If Sheldon calls a product a gimmick, I would be especially wary of it. If I do decide to put down that kind of money for a hub, it will be for a Phil Wood. If you really like the look of the chub hub, look into the Suzue Pro Max Carbon Fiber hub. It is a bit more reasonable in price. For about the same price as the chubhub, you can have a matching set of Suzue Pro Max CF hubs. |
I would like to bring this thread back, just to say that i'm running 8 months on the chub and for the money.. DEFINNITELY NOT WORTH IT! I've already run through the bearings TWICE! (which is what led me to this website, searching for issues with the chub and bearings.. found about that chain thing.. which is ridiculous.. you NEED a tight chain). The threads are on some seemingly cheap alloy, and the wheel is not performing as stiff as i was expecting (i have it laced to dt revolution spokes on mavic open pros - 32h), figured to modify by putting some deeper bolts through the axles - felt the bolts that came with the chub were a little TOO short.. and well, thus far - for my money, iw ould have rather gone for a set of Pauls or experimented with a level (which just seems like a big DUH!). no less, i am going to now experiment with a level since i jsut got some medical study money. i'll do some tests on that one.
no less, i agree with all who are scared about the money and i agree with sheldon. HE KNOWS! |

too tight hurts bearings. too loose hurts face.

HEY! i like my *******s tight, the same way i like my chains!
no really, i never felt i ran the chain UBER tight.. to taht point where you try to spin and it just feels like your ALWAYS pushing up a hill, as opposed to that smooth, zen glide. so if my chain was TOO tight, then damn.. i'm just about getting ***** with my wn thumb. |

I saw a link to the Chub Hub website on the Suzue Basic Hub thread and I decided to check it out. I got a wheel built by the company with the chub hub a few years back. I can't say a bad thing about it. I'd say definetially worth the money. I agree that they have the best customer service I've ever seen. The wheel they built for me has twisted spokes and hasn't gone untrue in 3 years. Masters they are at Chub. I'd highly recomend giving it a try! :D |
and , btw you donīt have to remove the cog to change bearings. the set that comes with it are poor quality, but put in a set of skf bearings, and yous be happy..:D
|
chub is dead. this thread should join it. of course if anyone has one they wanna get rid of in a 32 hole, hit me up...
|
nope, but i agree.
|
my drive side bearing would not go in until i removed the lockring and cog. i don't get how they could change the OD of the bearing race but it did.
|
is there a thread someplace that explains the death of chub? were they really just ****, or what? it seemed really sudden.

i think it went under because joe was a nice guy. iīm sorry to say, but its hard starting a biz when you are as good as him.. and he was not a seasoned vet in alu or carbon either- just a guy with a funny idea.. my chub is cool, but the other one i see sometimes acts up a lot.. |
does anyone know why theyre better than small regular hubs? ive read this whole thread, and i know more than half of you guys about them, and im 13
