Sugino BB3 have removable cups?

Howdy everyone,

I'm trying to find a new BB that I can use phil wood cups with on an old frame without buying a phil wood BB... Does anyone know if both cups are removable on this (103mm Sugino BB3) bottom bracket:

https://www.universalcycles.com/shopp...s.php?id=16123

Thanks,
Richard

Yes i do,

No that's a cartridge "whenitwearsoutossit" part, even if you some how hacked it out of the case it's for cartridge bearings and would not have the bearing races your looking for, hit up the LBS(S) for a 103 spindle for a Cup BB. good luck i would recommend just running a different crank, track down a square taper a shimano 105 crank

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottom_...t#Square_Taper

According to the Wiki, the obsolete Shimano UN71/72 would work, along with an obsolete Campy or a modified Tange.

Although he doesn't state it as such, I'm betting he's got an oddball bottom bracket threading.

Yeah, I know its a cartridge...

When I mean cup, I don't mean cup that has bearing races like on an older style BB, I mean the thin metal sleeve that has threads on it that fits around the BB shell. Most cartridge BBs have one side that's machined into the BB shell, normally the drive side, and have a plastic or metal cup on the non-drive side.

In the photo it looks like both cups are removable. Are yours?

Yeah, its an old triumph frame which has 26tpi threading... I'm trying to dig up something that'll work with the phil wood cups but at a cheaper price point...

I had this same problem with one of my old raleigh grand prix, all the threads were 26tpi and the old spindle was toast. I didn't leave room for much options. I ended up grabbing a Miche primato bottom bracket which has the removable cups and machining two new cups with 26tpi threading. Works great, no real issues except the taper is ISO but thats not a real issue since there are plenty of cranksets with ISO tapers out there. Another experiment that worked was to reuse the old cups with the primato BB. By carefully silver soldering a sleeve inside the cup it fit like a glove.

no the cups are not removeable. one is fixed and the other is not.

Ditch the sugino RD's, pick up some miche primato cranks and matching bb. use your cups instead of theirs. it'll work wonderfully. You'll enjoy the ride more, and the cost will be worth it over the life of the bike.

Yeah, I think the primato BB is going to have to be the way to go... I just wish it was JIS instead of ISO, as the cranks I already have are JIS and I have a fondness for them...
