Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I'm in desperate need of a new crank but I'm kind of a n00b

I bought this custom single-speed off of a guy last August for campus and city riding. I stuck to my Schwinn Sprint for awhile, but I made the mistake of leaving that at home in the family's garage and was stolen.
Apparently he got it off of NYCBikes, but I'm not positive.

I'm looking into getting a new chainring/cog set up, but the crankset is a 4-bolt Cyclone Precision, whom I've never heard of or seen anywhere else. I googled it and apparently, if I'm wanting to get a new chainring, mine as well just get a new crank. I could shell out dough for a higher 4-bolt ring, but I figure, what the hey. Let's look for a crankset.

Here's where things get confusing for me.
How do I know what cranks are compatible with my set up? If I get a new bottom bracket, then can I get a crank compatible with that? Or do I pretty much have to stick with whatever is compatible with the bracket I have? HELP.

Now that my baby is long gone, I need to really do some work on this thing. I already have some bullhorn's and a new brake lever coming in, and I'm in need of a new chain, too. Once the specs are fixed up, I'm going to paint it. I really hate the chrome look and want to make it unique but classy. So that'll probably take me forever to decide on

Here are some pictures for a better idea (ignore the dirty garage; I'm at home and my step-dad is a slob and they're cleaning out the house to move soon):

ahhhh rust

ewww dirty white griptape
I do love my commuter slicks, though I'll probably get some thinner tires in the future
I have the cages off the pedals currently because I let a friend borrow it and she could not for the life of her get the gist of it

Thanks a ton.
And don't be too harsh on me if I'm an idiot.
Keep in mind I'm learning. And there aren't a lot of folks around here who know about single-speed/fixed gear.

what you need is BCD (bolt circle diameter) measure of your crank. Most likely is is 104mm but check Sheldon. You can easily find chainrings which would fit, knowing crank's BCD.

It's pretty funny when my short female friends ride it, because their reach is smaller and I have to drop the seatpost down. I'm female, too, but I've got long arms and legs so I have a Ritchey stem with 120 reach.

After researching, it seems that it's basically a setup for a ss mtb.
Is this still usable if I want to do ss road racing?
I can find a chainring in the 104mm/4-bolt size, but if it's a bad idea, should I look into investing in a track crankset???

odds are the BB for those cranks is a standard JIS square-taper BB. Most square taper cranks (except for campy, miche, and some sugino depending on who you ask) will work with it.

just pick up your basic square taper bb and then find a crank that works, most ss/fg cranks are square taper

Truth!!! wrong side and not closed = death on wheel (since your front one will be long gone by the time death occurs)

i think i just put it on like that when i pulled it from the car.
i fixed it before i rode it.

i've actually decided to build up a fixie with a bianchi frame a bike co-op is going to sell to me for cheap, instead of fixing this. but the info on the cranks and bbs helped out for future reference.

Good luck with your new conversion, and remember to set it up very carefully before taking any pictures for bikeforums.
